Root bugless beast ,overlocked to 950 . question about heat

I was wondering what a safe operating temp is on the droid when overclocked to 950 on the bugless beast rom. I am running a temp monitor and it says that I am up over 100 quite a bit. Is that a safe temp? Usually around 102
 
Same issue. I got up to 104 today. i'm running two apps to monitor temp and set cpu also looks at temp. i'm not sure if i'm looking at batt temp or cpu temp. Can you monitor cpu temp?

I have been doing some work on this subject trying to figure out what normal operating temps are vs. the temps for my 1GHz overclock (running Bugless Beauty 8.4).

I use Temp Monitor (I downloaded the beta but I believe it is available on the market now). I'm still not sure that this is a true "cpu" temp but its irrelevant.

I'm guessing you are using SetCPU and if not...you should look into it for the different under/overclocking profile options it gives you. Anyway, I tuned my Droid back down to 550 and ran GPS Navigation back home from work which is about a 20-25 minute drive. My temp got up to 111 deg F according to Temp Monitor. The hottest I have ever been able to get my phone up to with my overclock on was 113 deg F (using multiple apps, games, streaming media, etc).

If Google Navigation can run at those temps...I have no concerns especially because with normal use, I usually hang below 100 degrees. Just my thoughts... Plus, when my phone wakes from sleep, it is typically around room temp.

Also, I ran GPS Navigation at 1 GHz in the car for the same time frame and it got up to 113.

Do some testing on your own and post your results. I know that this has been the biggest concern with OC but I am no longer concerned...Phone runs like a champ!

The app is now $1.99 in the Android Market. As a paid app, you know it works! :D

All kidding aside, I think it only goes up to 115 cause when you open the app it says "Max Range: 115.0". I have not gone above 113 but I have spent a lot of time around 105-107 when running various apps. I have only reached 113 degrees 2 times so again, I'm not personally concerned....but good point. I don't know for sure WHAT that temp is actually reading. I would love to see a board layout and where this temperature sensor is physically located.

Well, I used SetCPU to change the clock to 500 MHz and disabled profiles. In the car I used the car charger and put the phone in my custom car dock (complete with magnet). I had to pull the notification panel down and click in the temp monitor program for it to update the reading. Temperature seemed to take longer to increase but after a 28 minute drive it was reading pretty solid at 107 deg F.
 
hottest I got was 111 degrees running Orb to stream Sirius for about 6 hours at work. I do it everyday. Hopefully having it that hot for that long isnt going to kill it fast. ha.
 
I would love to have more specs on the circuitry of the Droid. They have to know that these would be OC'd (linux based and all). GPS runs as hot as anything even at the stock 550 clock.

Why is there a temperature sensor on the processor? I'm guessing that there is circuitry that chokes the frequency or voltage going to the processor if the temperature gets above a certain temp (close to 115 Deg F). Everyone is worried about temperature now with OC but I have yet to hear of anyone reaching or exceeding 115 deg F. Why is that?

On the TempMonitor app, the max range is listed at 115. If GPS can take the stock clock on the droid to 113 F, why would the sensor max out at 115? If you have OC'd a PC before, you know that while 70 deg C (just for example) may be the "danger" threshold for a certain chip but it will read higher than 70 deg C...it's not like it has a shut off on the reporting of that sensor.

Just rambling at this point but I don't think you can fry the droid if adjusting the frequency. If you screwed with voltage...may be a different story.

In the car for about 45 minutes today with Google Nav on, profiles off in SETCpu, running at 1GHz, and I got up to 114 F and it never moved higher. A few seconds after I took it off the car dock, it dropped to 113 F and started falling slowly so I KNOW it wasn't actually higher than 114 degrees and giving me a false indication.

I was going back from the navigation screen to the home screen to make sure that SETCpu was still showing 999MHz (which it did) and seeing if the phone was running sluggish (which it was...like it was underclocked). What happened to my phone is that all of the apps and widgets on the home screen disappeared at one point and never came back. My apps drawer worked and I could launch apps but the home screen was shut down. Cycled power when I got to my destination and working just fine now.

TempMonitor does not max out at 115... the temp sensor does... and that's Celsius :) The max Celsius that tempmonitor it will print out is 99, but if you see that you'll notice the flames first.

Fahrenheit goes all the way up to 200 for the app.

how do i change the monitor to show Fahrenheit?
 
i've gotten up to 44 degrees celsius while tethering with the phone sitting in the charging dock with the battery already at 100%. it feels kinda hot to me, but i doubt it's anywhere near it's limits. also i have my profile set to 550mhz while it's in the dock.
 
is anybody 100% certain of where this temp sensor is inside the phone? is it not on the cpu? if not, then how do we really know what the actual safe max temp is? how do we know what numbers are acceptable if we don't know where the sensor is and what it's really measuring?

There were two beta's that I downloaded from a different forum and I had two files to choose from (Celsius or Fahrenheit). Each one gave you both degrees C and F when you opened the app. Depending on which file you installed, that determined whether you got degrees C or F in the notification bar.

The Temp Monitor is available in the market but I have holding off until I find out what exactly this is monitoring. I could care less about battery temperature (as long as it doesn't blow up.) I don't have an iphone, so if need a new battery prematurely...I can buy one! lol

I don't disagree with what you are saying...fact is, I just don't know the what and where of this sensor. Here is my observation though. I have not seen one post that claims anyone seeing over 114 deg F. Anyone???

If you have more info on the sensor Dustin, we would all appreciate having that.

Seems that those higher clocks are not stable for my phone. I'm running Sholes 2.0.3 @ 1GHz clock. I was running bugless beauty but I like the 2.1 app launcher. It basically looks the same but Bugless ran a little better. I may switch back but it looks like the 1100 and 1300 clocks cause restarts and forced closures.

Thanks for the link though! I'm up for trying anything and I will be buying the new temp monitor!
 
When I finally did a factory wipe and installed the beast on a clean phone, almost immediately after it booted up the cpu went to 120 degrees while ocing at 1ghz. It was there for 5 minutes before i could get the monitor set straight. Assuming that 120 is really bad, does anyone think i could have done damage?
