Root Build your own ROM

Is there a way to build your own rom? Is there an app or a program to be able to build your own custom roms, or to change existing roms? I really like cm7, but I really have issues with a few of its features, and I want to know if I can change them. I found this article: How To: Create Your Own Custom ROM for Android, Part 1 ? Is this a good way to do what I want, or is there something else that I should use? I want something simple, because I am still very new, and I don't fully understand what goes into making roms.

Also, can someone explain how I would make a rom from scratch? I am a noob, so I don't plan to attempt it anytime soon, although someday I would love to make one. I'm just curious how people do this, and what all goes into making it work properly. If I wanted to make my own custom rom, such as cm7, how would I do that? How did they do that? Thanks!

Be prepared to learn a programming language; Java is what android uses.

Thanks for the link and the advice! I see how to create apps, but how do you change and build roms with that? It doesn't seem to have any instructions...unless I'm blind

Ok, so this is kind of related to this. I have found a few ROMs that I really like, but I can't decide which one I like the best. There are parts of all of them that I really like. Is there any way that I can take parts of each ROM and combine them into one? If there is, can anyone explain how? Thanks everyone for your replies!

yes you can combine parts of different ROMs, as I know Skyraider 4.0 is a mix of CM7 and sense. I don't believe it is easy to do and depending what roms you are trying to mate, it could be beyond your skills. You may have more luck posting that question on the thread I linked above to the "basic android kitchen".
