Bullet bit, sorry OptiS

Encouraged by the users here and the guides available and just what seems to be the "general hackability" of this device... I finally decided the Optimus S and its "programs need to close to free up memory even if the program is your messaging program so sorry you didn't get the texts LOL" was on its way to a "small wifi-only Pandora/offline gps/geocaching device" land of happiness.

Just ordered the Sprint Galaxy Victory.. .had to finally add that $10 data fee to my Sero-P plan, so $50/mo whatever it's all good.

Looking forward to helping out and testing things around here. Seems there's a good dev community and that was the selling point for me.

Needed a "not huge" phone with power and JB with an "open-ish" design.

So, hooray!

Thanks!

Gotta admit, Telesales when I got my OptiS was much easier and nicer. This agent was obviously not an "English as first-language" lady, and she kept trying to add things to my order without asking first.

Lots of "well a phone is an investment as you know so i'm going to add insurance protection"
"no"
"well it can get broken"
"yes I know this please just add the phone it's all good"

then she added screen protectors without asking.. just a "so the screen gets smudged and we use our fingers so i'm going to add screen protectors to your order"
"no"
"but screens can get damaged and this is an extra layer"
"no, just the phone , let's just order the phone and get that shipped thanks".

Asked for waived activation fee "we'd love to do that but it's for everyone"
Okay how about waived delivery cost "same thing love to do it"

prolly just got a crappy rep.

edit: Sprint chat was great they refunded the shipping because apparently that was "expedited" shipping and I never asked for that. She just put expedited on the order. so when I inquired about free shipping, she should have downgraded the shipping but didn't.

I'm still using the screen protector that came in the original packaging.

Wipe down your scissors and wash your hands to ensure both are lint/dust/dirt free, trim the tab at the top so you have a clean edge, and trim the part at the bottom that covers the curved part of the bezel. Essentially just cut it so it only covers the screen.

Just be super careful and peel the smallest amount off of the screen as is necessary to cut it. The tiniest speck of dust will cause an infuriating bubble, and repeeling it to get rid of said speck and bubble makes more bubbles. Wiping with alcohol pads to cleanly reapply leaves lint which makes you wish you only had bubbles. Ask me how I know.

Anywho, do it right the first time.

Edit: I came from an optiV (same phone on VM). Loved it, and still do. Great devs, great community, great potential (for its time), great phone. I didnt know this when i bought it 3 years ago, and felt like i lucked out on picking an awesome phone. I feel the same way now about my Victory. IMO, this is 2013's Opti for the same reasons. Funny enough, a LOT of us upgraded from the original Opti.

FYI, if it's your thing (I bought my opti for the sole purpose of SNES emulation) the Victory is the ideal phone for PlayStation emulation. 10hours into Final Fantasy IX and ~L50 Sorcerer on Diablo. FTW. PM me for emulator/ROM links...as long as you own the original discs. Gotta keep it legal winkwinknudgenudge

Oh I still have my files from my original XBox's hard drive when I backed up my media winkwink before moving it into boxes :) But thanks on that.

figure this will tie in well with my Nexus 7 and I can finally screw with NFC on the phone stuff. Programmable tags for regular tasks and all will be nice.

The Optimus V/S was a gem among the "fractured" android market at the time. amazing how many people were making it do things it never should have done.

The fact this phone is unlockable, rootable, and runs basically a tweaked JB (Samsung seems to not bloat as horribly as they used to) means even without custom ROMS it'll be able to be very "vanilla". Of course custom ROM devving is appreciated!

Since it was shipped expedited with UPS it'll be here monday afternoon, so one final weekend of backing up my Opti and all. Then I'll throw in a spare MicroSD to the Opti as it begins its new life.
