Help Bump charging GRRR

Mayhem

Android Expert
Ok, so I've looked around and tried the suggestions I've read regarding bump charging. I've charged it using the A/C adapter and attempted to bump charge it while at work for 9 hours. Charge 'til green. Unplug. Plug back in until the green light comes on. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

No matter what, if I charge it while it's turned off, it's instantly around 96% when I power it on. I honestly cannot recall the phone ever getting to the point where the orange light never came back on while trying to bump.

If I charge it while on, I get to 100% but it drops to 98% pretty much immediately after unplugging it.

I'm at a loss as to what to do next. I bought the phone outright from a Verizon store that wasn't corporate and have no idea whether or not the battery is covered in this case.

I'm running das BAMF Cubed 1.09, which shows as Android 2.3.4, sense version 3.0 and software version 2.11.605.5. Whether or not any of that comes into play, I have no idea.

I recently did a factory reset while at BAMF 1.09, formatted the SD card and generally cleaned the crap off of my phone. I wiped Dalvik and the cache partition.

Thanks.

Someone more knowledgeable can correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I read on bump charging, the point was to bump it up as close to 100% as possible, but that phones don't charge up to 100% because it is bad for the battery to sit at 100% while plugged in. It wears the life of the battery down quicker. Therefore, the battery jumps right back down when unplugged, or at least shortly thereafter.

I've seen mine stay on 100 for a bit, jump down to 98 or 96, just depends. Perhaps my battery is bad too.

Mine will stay on 100% for quite a while (~15-20 min) after I take it off charge - with the radios off. As soon as I turn on 4G, yes, it immediately drops a few %.

Scratch that... Took it off charge 5 minutes ago, 4G running, still at 100%.

Mayhem, you may also want to check to see if bump charging is needed by your kernel. IIRC the reason stock HTC phones need to be bump charged has to do with the HTC kernel if you are running a custom kernel it may not benefit from bump charging

As the other poster stated, the phone does charge to 100% but if left on the charger while at 100%, the phone actually slows down the charge and lets the battery fall to around 95%-96% and then charges up again.

This helps protect the battery and phone and yes it helps with less wear on the battery. Depending on when you unplug the phone from charging, it can stay at 100% for a few seconds or a couple of minutes but most of time it will drop to around 98%.

Its just the way it is. Its most likely not a battery problem...

I hadn't even considered that. I'll definitely check on the developer's forums.

Thanks.
