Root Buttons don't work, creative workarounds?

Ok, so I messed up my phone by dropping it in some soup for like two seconds (gah! Only the bottom got wet) and I thought it was completely busted, but after letting it rest and dry with some rice for a day or so, it seems to be somewhat revived. It takes several tries for it to turn on sometimes (the Motorola "M" is shown for several minutes until eventually the Droid eye goes sometimes, other times doesn't get past the M stage.) Once the phone is actually on, though, it functions relatively normally and everything seems to be okay except that none of the physical buttons work.

In addition, I can't charge the phone and it doesn't recognize when it's plugged into a computer. Not having a home, menu, and back keys are tough - let me tell you. The camera button also doesn't work nor do the volume rockers. Camera isn't a big deal since I can simply place a key on the screen for camera (same with search). But home and menu are pretty vital - back isn't 100% necessary. And I guess volume would be nice, but I can survive without. I'm due for an upgrade in 4 months, so going to try to ride it out. The power button is the only one that DOES work (and it also turns the screen on/off successfully). The keys and charging actually did work for a day or so, but now are complete non-functional. Not sure why they suddenly stopped working. The backlit behind the home key also doesn't work anymore (although the other keys are backlit). That doesn't really matter though.

Ok, so first I just bought an external battery charger from Amazon, so hopefully that will fix the charging issue:

Amazon.com: Battery Charger for Motorola Droid X (Mb810): Cell Phones & Accessories

To get the buttons back, I found the Button Savior app, but I'm not rooted so the only button that works is Home (which is KEY as that's the most important). However, it would be nice to have Menu and back as well, but I need to be rooted.

Is there a way to root the phone without having to connect it to a PC? My phone doesn't recognize the connection.
I'm not 100% sure what my USB Debugging is set as...but I think it's On. Phone is dead and can't charge battery until my external battery charger comes in tomorrow. But rooting the phone would be nice in order to get the full functionality of the Button Savior app. Also, I can't get to settings through the normal menu option since the menu button doesn't work (both the soft and physical keys).

Any other thoughts/suggestions on how to get the phone functionality back without the buttons working?

Sorry for the lengthy description. Thanks so much for any help!

Sounds like you need adb for wifi, but not sure how to root via that.

I think your best bet would be to use an electronics cleaner to rinse out the usb port until you can get it to work. (I'd squirt it up into your X's usb port, while holding it over a sink or tub.)

I think you can download the z4root apk using your phone's browser. Assuming you're not on gingerbread though.

The ICS Launcher should work though. It'll have the touchscreen buttons on the bottom. You can try that instead.

EDIT: Nevermind. Just tested the ICS Launcher and it doesn't have the menu key.

If you do end up rooting your phone I would suggest using zMooth rather than Button Savior. I used both for a while and then went strictly to zMooth, I haven't used my hard menu, home, back or search buttons in months.
