Buying as a Gift - Installed Apps

I've got the Fire in my hot little hands, have been playing with it for a day, but it's really a Christmas present for my mother.

So, my question is--when I deregister it and then reregister it with her Amazon account, what happens with all the (free) apps I've installed? Will I have to reinstall everything? If I have to change logons for apps like Netflix or whatever, that's fine, but I'm just wondering how far I should bother going with setup before I hand it over to her. (Sure would be nice to have lots of apps already in place before we do the official switch.)

You'll probably want to do a Factory Data Reset and then just set it up with her info, and yes, you'll likely lose any apps you've loaded, but those can be brought back easily enough.

But I shouldn't have to do a factory reset, right? That's not a requirement of handing it to a new owner? I guess I'm trying to find out if deregistering/reregistering wipes a Fire clean (in other words, does a factory reset).

There's not going to be anything on the Fire from my playing with that I don't want Mom to see. :) It would be great to be able to get much of the setup up of non-Amazon stuff out of the way so that when I hand it to her and she enters her Amazon account info, we don't then have to spend a few hours setting up all other manner of stuff.

Try it out. What do you have to lose? When you put it back on your account you'll get back all you had.

Okay, so I finally got around to deregistering and reregistering.

Basically, it is kind of the worst of both worlds--it keeps the apps you installed, even keeps them running, but pretty much every one then tells you that you don't "own" the app. (Even if it was free.) The best was Enhanced E-Mail, still running and downloading the e-mail from my own account, but then trying to open it would give the "you don't own this" error.

So I ended up uninstalling everything and redownloading.

Now, Netflix kept working, but I don't want Mom to have access to my account. :-) And I couldn't find any way to log out of the Netflix app. So I just uninstalled it and reinstalled it.

It could be different for sideloaded apps--these were all from the Amazon App Store.

But it didn't really take very long, and it certainly wasn't difficult to do.

(Kind of irked that you still need a credit card on an Amazon account even when you're downloading free apps.)
