buying tablet need advice

Hi Everyone,
I am want to buy a Samsung tablet that is on sale but I'm not sure about the Android version. I know it's not the latest version, it's V.4.0 ice cream sandwich. Does Android update to the latest version eventually, if not is that version fine. The tablet is Samsung Tab 2 10.1 16gb WiFi 1 GB RAM, 3 megapixel Camera. Price $287, that's on sale at the moment.

I've just bought an android smart phone, it's a Telstra ZTE Frontier 4G, that has Android 4.0 as far as I know and seems to be fine but I've only had it for one week. I'm doubling up here with my questions but I am having an issue with the phone at the moment. I searched on google for a web page, found it and on the page there was a video describing something, so I clicked on it and starting listening but didn't want to watch or listen as it was boring and I realised I wasn't interested, so clicked out of that. I deleted all my searches but now every time I go to google search and click on a web page that darn video plays and I have no way of stopping it. I don't see anything, no video just the voice so I have to turn the phone off to stop it. Can anyone help?.

Sorry for the long post.
thank you,
Joan.

You mean the Samsung Tab 2? Samsung already released the update for it to Jellybean. Anyway, the trouble with nonNexus brands is that after a year or so, updates become scarce. They are usually just supported for updates for about 18mos, and if you have a lower end device, it usually doesn't get updated.

Depends entirely in you and how you expect your device to work. I have a Galaxy Tab Plus. It's a two year old model and is running on an official ICS update. I generally don't mind not having the latest OS since its not a deal breaker for me as I change devices every two years or so. However I can say that for most purposes the Tab 2 is a good device.

I've been looking at Nexus tablets and they are too expensive for me at the moment so I am still looking at the Samsung Tab2 10.1 which is Android 4.0. Now I've been hearing about one with a sim card and one without. Does it matter if I don't get a sim card and if I don't what are the disadvantages of not having a sim. I want to use Wi/fi mostly as data would probably be expensive too. But I never know maybe one day I will want to use the data so does not having a sim card prevent me from using the internet?. so many things to consider. I will have to go into the store and hope the salespeople know what the specs are. I want a front and rear camera too.
thank you,
Joan.

A sim card is not necessary for occasional use. If you have a Smart phone, "Tether" your phone (making it a wi-fi hotspot, and connect your tablet to it, but watch your data usage.

Good luck.

Yeah id just wifi tether from your phone (if possible) or use your home wifi. Id never pay extra for a tablet that can take a sim but if theyre the same price then go for it

Thank you again for responding. I am in Australia, I do have a smart phone that I connect to my modem via wi/fi.I won't worry about the sim card then. I don't know how to tether it though with the tablet (when I get one). I think I will go for the Samsung galaxy 2.10.1 but I need to find out from the store if it has a front and rear camera. I like that it has 16 gigs of internal memory and can be expanded with an SD card. They are selling for around $287 at the moment. Another store has a brand called "Braun", that has Android 4.1 Jellybean but only 4 gigs internal memory, it also comes with a 16 gig SD card but can be expanded to 32 gigs. Camera is 5.0 pixels and has front and rear camera, it's on $240. Not sjure which one to go for at the moment even though I did say I probably would go for the Samsung.
any thoughts?
Many thanks,
Joan.

That's an odd one... did you figure it out?
I might try killing the app. If that doesn't work, clear all data for the app (but be prepared to lose bookmarks)

Samsung over any not mainstream brand for me. If we were talking Sony tablets, or Nexus tablets, its a different story. And all Samsung tablets have front cameras.

Yes, for some reason that annoying video (just the voice over) that kept playing suddenly stopped. It wasn't an app, it was something I clicked on a web page then every time I went to google search and open a page that darn thing would start playing, it didn't interfere with whatever I was looking at but it was playing in the background. I don't know what I did but it's gone now thank goodness.

With regard to the Samsung Tab 2 10.1 tablet. I phoned the store and they told me that it doesn't have a front and rear camera. I would need the front camera for Skype. I am concerned that it only has 16 gigs internal memory, and there is no option to expand with an SD card the store said. I would have to use a flash drive. I thought all Android had SD cards. the Bauhn which is only $249 has only 4 gigs of internal memory but comes with a 16 GB SD card. Even though the Bauhn has front and rear camera's and Android Jelly Bean I am still leaning to the Samsung cause I know that brand. What to do. I don't have a lot of money and it seems I want a lot for my dollar but it's between these 2, what would you do?.
Joan.

Thanks again for that link. I went to another store and I bought the Samsung galaxy 2 Tab 10.1 GT-P511. The other store was wrong as you suggested and the one I have does indeed have the front and rear camera's. I have only had it for 2 days so still learning how to use it. I love it so far and I was able to install my Hotmail and Bigpond email accounts as well as the required gmail. the only problem I have found this morning was my friend sent me an email to my bigpond account with an attachment and it doesn't open, the boxes for the pics are in the body of the email with a little red x in the corner. I can't find anything in settings to correct this. I googled it and found a fix, big mistake. After following the instructions all my email accounts were deleted. I didn't ask anyone just followed what someone else had asked. I was able to reinstall them but I got a fright.
Also, would you be able to advise me about anti virus software for my tablet, would Avast be ok, is there anything else I should have on the tablet to protect myself?.
Sorry for the long post,
regards,
Joan.

Depends on the email app but you should have had a button saying download all pictures.

Antivirus apps aren't needed as long as you don't download apps from other sources apart from the Play Store. You also can't get viruses from the internet.

As long as you use a secure connection, like don't do it over a public wifi hotspot, just use your own connection, also take care on what apps you install. This is the main reason why I prefer 3G tablets. They're not reliant on wifi.

if you are kind of worried about updates, I would recommend that you wait for Samsung to release their new Samsung Galaxy Tab 3.0. This tablet is rumored to have an Intel clover trial processor which will greatly increase the performance of the new tablet. It should also come with the latest Android 4.2 jelly bean or if so it may come with Android 5.0 key lime pie. You may want to wait but it will be more expensive to get this tablet over the Galaxy Tab 2 point 0. If you want something cheaper go with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.0.
