This is the first Android tablet that I'm going to buy (mainly because of the S-pen). After doing some research, it seems that Samsung has a history of releasing updates for Android very late. Is this a deal breaker? If I root the device, could I upgrade as soon as Google releases the newest Android upgrades?

I wouldn't think so, they already said it would be getting Jelly Bean. And really ICS is really nice. As for root, I believe you could as long as there is one available for rooted devices.

lets just say. at least we get the updates unlike other brands.
also Samsung are awesome at making tablets and phones. great hardware but down side is they love there plastic..
the note 10.1 is my first tablet as well. i like it its great.
