so i broke down and got the iphone.. and i love it.. i don't care what anyone says.. it fits me and for what i need. my question is i was under the impression that i could still download apps from the market if i used wifi on my eris. i want to let my 3 year old play with it so he will leave my phone alone.. but it doesn't work and he is flipping out because i can't get his "game" angry birds on it lol.. is there anyway to do this? even if i root it? thanks

The 3 year old doesn't need an Eris to play with. blocks or a bouncy ball should safice. maybe a doll or action figure.

as much as i appreciate your advice and response to my thread, my child is very smart and does play with those things. I was just wondering if there was anyway to download apps after it had been taken off of contract. So when he is at the Drs office or somewhere , where his attention span is strained he can play it, not as a "babysitter" or anything like that.

You can download apps from the Market over wifi on your old Eris, but you will need a different e-mail address from the one associated with the Market on your new phone.

I don't think that this is true at all. You can multiple devices associated with a single market account, as far as I know. In fact, if you go to market.android.com and ask to install an app, it will ask which device you want to install on, implying that you can have multiple devices. You could, for example, want to have a Xoom tablet and a smartphone with the same market account.

As long as you are past the activation point of the Eris, you can put it in airplane mode and then turn on WiFi and it should work fine. If you are stuck at activation, you could always activate it temporarily on your account, put ot in airplane mode and turn it off, reactivate your current phone and then turn the phone back on, turn the WiFi radio on and it should be just fine.

[edit] Just read the OP's post again and he has an iPhone, so clearly there will only be this Eris activated on the market account anyway.

Yeah you are right. I tried to associate an Eris and a DX with the same account (during activation) and had some problems. But that was quite a while ago, before the Market had a website. If you use the Market website now there is definitely an option to choose which device to send the app to. Sorry for the bad info.

I moved on to another phone and my wife currently uses the Eris as a device, not a phone. Over WiFi she install apps and all that. Even has it all under her own gmail account. All the perks without 3G and phone connectivity.

I don't have an Eris but I do have an android device anyway I understand letting a 3 y.o play with it and what not. Its actually good for them and I have a smart little 3 year old myself. He plays with regular toys, blocks, trains, cars, puzzles but he also likes toddler games on my phone and its not a babysitter don't feel judged that you do what you do for your son/daughter.
