Help Calendar synching and internet use

If I set up the default calendar with a gmail account, then disable calendar autosynching, will my Galaxy never again try to authenticate, or even communicate with a server when I am trying to use the calendar?

Can I disable auto synching only for the calendar?

It probably won't unless you sync it manually. Why would you turn off calendar sync? Unlike mail, calendar and contacts are synced roughly once a day - so there's no battery gain in turning these off, and they consume little data as well.
