Calender Problem on Kitkat. Is it just me?

Excuse me , but why do you need a notification widget on the screen? Even if you miss the notification sound, there's a new message icon in the notification bar. Same as seeing a widget to me. You can also set it to vibrate.

Hey. Is there a way to turn on lock screen notification? In 4.2.1 if I missed a call or received new text messages while my phone was muted (in a movie), when I got to the lock screen it would show me how many calls I missed and new text messages I had received and I could swipe left to see missed calls or left to see new text messages. Can I enable this function in 4.4.2?

I prefer live widgets to the notification bar. I hate consolidation. I like to keep everything separate in it's own box so I get to choose when I deal with each type of communication and source of information. The notification bar is a confusing mess to me. It shows every email, text message, app update, weather alert, amber alert, etc, etc, etc. I usually just hit clear all to clean up my notification bar without even reading the messages. If I want to read email, I go to my email app. If I want to do texting, I got to my texting app. If I want to see weather, I got to my weather app. That is the way I like it, all nice and neat, with everything in it's own area where I can access it when I want to. Live widgets are great because they let me know that there is new activity in an area without me having to go their and open the app to check and see.

Another of Google's whims ... it's still there but now off by default.

Go to menu>settings>security and enable widgets under screen security. Then go to the lock screen, swipe left to get a screen with a "+" on it and click the + to add. You are looking for dash clock, I believe.

Well, that may be, but what I am talking about are the texting and email apps that came with the latest two roms I have tried which are both vanilla roms that do not have any custom phone manufacturer apps or bloatware.
But some of the complaints you have describe things that indicate that you have not been using stock Android apps, but rather apps the ROM developer choose. For instance, you mention an old yellow messaging app and how the new email app no longer has a 'select all' option. Trouble is, the stock Android messaging app has never been yellow and the stock email app has never had a 'select all' option. Those apps were added by the ROM developer. IOW, you're complaining about changes the ROM developer made in the apps included that Android has nothing to do with.

Just trying to put things straight...

Well, it worked but it did not restore the lock screen notifications. It just offered me the option the add a widget to the lockscreen, like for hangouts. I really like the notification shortcuts better, but hey we are talking about google here.

I am not disagreeing with you. I honestly do know who makes these apps or the proper terminology to describe what I am looking for. Here are some images to show what I am talking about and you can tell me whether they are android or phone manufacturer apps.

In this pic you will see the white and yellow envolope with the title "messaging" and the red and white new message number. You can tell me if it was a stock android app or not.

In this image the red arrow points to the icon for the email app I am talking about.

I guess they didn't include it in the rom. All you have to do is install it.

Thanks. It is okay, but not exactly what I was looking for. Actually, I would much rather figure out how to get my live widgets back.

Here is a picture of my wife's i-727 that is still running 4.2.1. See the little red and white numbers on the messaging, email and phone icons? How do I get those back? That is what I would like to know.

Here is what the lock screen notifications look like I was talking about. Can't find another one that looks like this. It came with the stock 4.2.1 rom I flashed to my phone.

14+-+1

Those little notification numbers are not an Android thing. Must be related to the custom ROM'

Are you sure? Every android rom and phone I have ever owned and used has had them up until version 4.4.2.

Is there a way to find out who created an app that is on your device? Like in windows, you can click on HELP and then ABOUT to find information about a programs creator and version. Is there way to do this in android?

I think those notification numbers are a Samsung thing, aren't they? My previous phone was a Samsung and I think I remember those, but not 100% sure because I switched to Nova shortly after I got it.

Ah ha. You might be right there. All my phones have been Samsungs.

Yep. I use POP too. That is why I don't use the GMAIL app, it only allows for IMAP to be used with Gmail address. Actually, I prefer the Aquamail app best, but it also does not have the Delete All option. Not sure why most app creators feel that they need to force you to delete each email one by one. I hate that.

Some third party launchers, such as Nova and Apex, have add-ons which can add those little "unread count" badges to all icons. That doesn't depend on the ROM at all, so you could try that.

You might be right but I now think they are app specific. I installed Aquamail yesterday and setup some email accounts. I put an Aquamail widget on my home screen (not the app icon) and voila! there are the unread badges on the aquamail widget on my homescreen. The same is true for the K-9 email app. So now I believe that those badges are not rom or launcher specific, they are app specific.

Now all I need to do is find a phone/dailer app and a messaging apps that has the same function. If I only knew what the name of this function is. I call them "Live Widgets" but I am not sure that is the correct name.

Personally, I don't care where or how they work, I would just like to get them back somehow. I guess I got spoiled by easy of just having to turn my phone on and seeing at a glance if I had anything new (of importance) to take care of without having to open each app individually or having too read through a whole list of garbage on the notification bar to see if there was anything of importance.

What is surprising to me is that I seem to be the only one here that know about these. It is hard for me to believe that because every android phone I have used has had them up until 4.2.1.

Ah Ha! I think I am seeing where the problem is. This is an android vs apple thing, isn't it? I was doing some google searching and found out the little red badge notifications on app icons was invented by apple. It's not that people on here don't know about them, they just don't want to talk about them because it's an apple feature, and most on here believe that you must have an inbred hate for everything apple to use an android phone.

Okay. I get it guys. But nobody hates apple more then me, okay. I have never owned or used an apple device of any kind and had no idea that this was a feature originally invented by apple, okay. I thought it was an android thing. Regardless of who invented it, I still like it. A good idea is a good idea, even if you don't like the person who came up with it.

Anyway, I will figure it out on my own as I feel that it is a taboo subject on this forum. Sorry for sticking my foot in it, again! Ya'll are off the hook.

I think it's that you're late to the party. This has been discussed so frequently in the beginning that it's one of those Android idiosyncrasies that is commonly accepted. Because you've always had Samsung phones with touchwiz, you've always had the notifications overlay. Similar to people coming from the iPhone to an Android phone that doesn't have this feature.

I'm no spring chicken and I find myself lamenting the loss of features that i have gotten used to. It's not that they are better, but they are known and they are comfortable. Begrudgingly I come to find that 75% of the feature changes are actually more efficient. It is possible to get what you want, it just takes a little more work.
