Calibrating a non rooted phone's battery

Hi, I have a htc Wildfire S mobile running 2.3.5 and it's non rooted. I heard calibrating the battery will improve the battery life and the steps are:
Turn your phone on and charge it for 8 hours or more
Unplug the charger
Turn your phone off and charge it for one hour
Unplug the charger
Turn on the phone and wait 2 minutes
Turn your phone off and charge it for one hour
Unplug, turn it on and use as normal.

I'd like to know whether this method is safe? Is it okay to charge the phone for 8 hours?
Also, is it better to charge the phone to 100% around twice a day when the battery level is not very low? Thanks in advance!

Ashley, welcome to Android Forums. :hello:

This procedure will have little effect on battery life. Android already does really well at managing battery life. The manufacturer isn't hiding anything from you. Just follow their instructions and you'll do fine.

Some things to keep in mind:
Background syncing and wifi consume lots of power. Keep them turned off unless you need them.

It takes a good couple weeks for Android to fully optimize a battery.

You should run the battery down to zero once in a while so Android can calibrate the bottom end of your battery's cycle. But don't do it often as it's fairly hard on lith-ion batteries.

It's best to keep your battery charged between 30-90% for long battery lifespan.

Hope this helps!

I had heard somewhere that charging when the phone is not almost dead is actually a bad thing...Was that just a myth?

If you didn't read it in HTC's user manual, most likely a myth. Their engineers know much more about the lith-ion batteries provided with their phones than we armchair experts.

ok now that changes my whole perspective on charging phones now!:eek::banghead:
I realize now that I actually know nothing about batteries!:eek:
