Help Call out problem xperia x8 ..help!!

I bought a unlocked xperia x8 off ebay with a signal problem it wasnt receiving any signal my friend said it could be loose connection so i bought it. Received it this morning and my friend fixed the signal issue so i can now get 4 bars but the problem is i cannot call or message out, cuts off right away. I am on giffgaff (o2) network and wonder if anyone could shed some light aas to what i can do to try solve this problem.

I have no APN's at all just tried downloading a giffgaff and installed it but still cant ring out?! and the apn isnt even showing
 
The APN or lack of, should only affect internet based functions and not calling or messaging. Do you get an error of any description when trying to perform these functions?
