Help Call Problem - Tones and Unable to hear

I've been having a problem on my Hero for several months now and just found out that others in my family are having the same issue. They have a Hero and a Moment, so the issue does not appear to be a Hero specific issue.

The problem is when making a call (in or out) for the first few seconds of the call the other person can't hear you (like you are muted). Then you will hear one or two tones and the call proceeds like normal. Sometimes this happens 1 second after making the call, or up to 5 seconds later.

I first thought this was from a custom rom, but after a clean install of the regular firmware, it still continued.

Any ideas?

Are any of you using a Sprint Airave device? If so, this is the confirmation tone that tells you you are connected to the irave. If not,maybe someone else has an idea?

I know this is old, but the only additional information I found out is this happened worse in low signal areas. We have an airave device now, but we didn't before.
