Call / Text Message app for diff notifs?

Hey Everyone,

I need some help. I'm a systems administrator, meaning that for two weeks out of the month i'm "on call". When i'm on call, I have to leave my cell phone on loud all night so that if something breaks, I receive texts from our monitoring system and can wake up to handle it. I normally sleep w/ my phone on silent. What i'm wondering, is if there's an app out there where I can do the following:

a) I can put my phone on silent.. but when I get a text from "Nagios", "Person A", or "Person B", the phone will play the ringtone so that I am notified

b) My phone can be on silent, but when I receive a call from "Person C" or "Person D", it rings loud to wake me up

c) all other texts / calls remain silent

does anyone know of anything?

I read a post around here that mentioned an app that would silence except for 5 contacts... Im sorry but i forget the name and where it was posted...

Ok cool. I installed the selective silence app and plan on using it for the call aspect, but honestly the more important feature that I need is for the text messaging aspect because that is the way that i'm notified via our monitoring system. Anybody got anything for me? Thanks for the help guys.
 
I'd use one of the free task automation apps out there:

Automateit

Llama

Tasker


You can setup profiles per person, specify the ringtone for each, even make them have a repeating notification so you will be sure to get notified if you don't hear it the first time.

While it may be difficult at first, a simple profile isn't too hard to setup. Personally I found Automateit and Llama to be very user friendly compared to Tasker, however Tasker's powers are much greater. That being said for your example I'd recommend Llama then Automateit then Tasker.

Give em all a shot though :)

So... I got it resolved thanks to all of your help.. replying so that people in the future can do the same. So, this is what I did.

I installed the pro version of AutomateIt. The free version may have been able to do what I wanted, but I skipped it and went straight w/ the pro version which was only $1.50. Within this app, I did the following, which can be done for any scenario.

In my case, when I get a text from our monitoring system, it's going to have the word "host:" somewhere in the text since that's the default template.

I set an event for:
a) when receive an sms w/ the word "host" in it, set device sound mode to normal
b) when receive an sms w/ word "host" in it, set volume of notification stream to 100%

so, when I get one of these texts when the phone is on silent, it will automatically first set my sound mode from silent to normal, and then my volume for text messages to 100%.

problem solved.

for phone calls, you essentially do the same thing.. when "contact a" calls, a) set sound mode to normal
b) set ringer volume to 100%

I'm glad you were able to jump into it right away. I had a really hard time at first lmao.
