Calling All Grammar Nazi's

For instance, if I get called out for any grammatical error in this thread, I will take off my hat to you. I like to learn, and that includes being corrected. :)
It's long been my habit of making mistakes myself when I post something pointing out someone else's error. It's so bad that I actually EXPECT it to happen.

And if you don't like it... I could care less

(there's one of mine right there ;) it should be "I couldn't care less" because if you could, that might mean you actually care quite a lot... it's a semantic error but again, fair game for our purposes ;))
I grew up hearing that as "I could care less," and said it that way for many years. Then one day I asked myself, "HUH?!" It made no sense. Ever since I've said it the correct way, "I COULDN'T care less." :D

I'm a huge grammar nazi--at least in my head. I've gotten to a point where I don't need/want to correct everything I see [that grates on my nerves] any more. Oh, occasionally I will, but not like 20+ years ago. I've simply gotten used to the idea that:

. your will be misused for you're
. it's will be misused for its
. there will be misused for they're or their
. definitely will be misspelled as definately (or various other ways)
. I will be misused for me (by people who think they sound smart, but actually sound really stupid), as in "this is great for John and I" or "him and I's house."
. apostrophes will be inserted where they don't belong: photo's, her's, would'nt

and so on.

And there folks^^^ is a summary of all 14,000+ of my posts:rofl:

Hah, yeah I've been caught out a couple of times already in this thread. :)

I grew up hearing that as "I could care less," and said it that way for many years. Then one day I asked myself, "HUH?!" It made no sense. Ever since I've said it the correct way, "I COULDN'T care less." :D

Well done! Thinking about what we actually say is something George Orwell recommended, and to come to a realization like that on your own is very impressive.

Exactly. You would be a nervous wreck trying to correct the Internet.

I kind of read over the stuff usually, because what someone is saying is more important, especially on a forum where we want to remain friendly. That's why I thought this thread would be a good idea. It's an invitation, after all :)

. apostrophes will be inserted where they don't belong: photo's, her's, would'nt

I agree with this, but you know, I've found myself choosing to consciously break this rule myself on certain occasions, and it compels me to ask a question.

Although it's grammatically incorrect, how do people feel about writing CD's for the plural of Compact Disc?

I think it looks better than CDs, and it does for some other capitalized abbreviations.

 How does that correct it ?
Calling All "Grammar" Nazis would better, yeah?

Anyway, I could really care less about other's grammar. I only care about my own grammar. Grammar is not necessarily indicative of intelligence, knowledge or even literacy. Heck, I've edited so many of my own posts because the grammar was horrible at first write. Typically happens when I am attempting to help a forum member as quickly as possible via mobile.

2 pennies.

EDIT: Grammar :D

 How does that correct it ?

Dave Berry used to publish a regular piece in his column called Ask Mr. Language person.

He regularly criticized grammar mistakes and my post was a homage to one I recalled he had on the silly use of quotation marks.

Dave was a humorist, and wrote that before the internet sprang up.

The world was a funnier place back then.

I apologize for the terrible reference, I don't know what I was thinking.

Sorry.

Grammar as spoken by high school and college age people still seems important to me. I can most often discern the ones who are mimicking their peers, despite their own better grades and better performance and seriousness overall in school. And then there are those peers who haven't a clue as to the differences between your and you're, let alone yore. :D

Grammar on the pages in a forum such as this one does not irk me quite as much, because we're in a hurry to get our point out there and we often don't punctuate correctly (and yes, punctuation is a portion of written/typed grammar ;)). We'll also use abbreviations which don't exist (yet ;)) in dictionaries (prolly, lemme, c'mon, etc).

Oh no!

I'm just going to pretend that I never saw this thread and back away very slowly...:creep:

Ha! I see that I am actually walking towards it, but you get my point... Dexters..:P

It isn't the grammar or the spelling. It's the damned shorthand! I blame smartphones and the character limit on texting. Too hard to type correct sentences on something that small or get all you want to say in one post.

By the way, pedantic that I am, picking someone up on their spelling doesn't make you a grammar nazi and that's just one of my grammar nazi hates. When someone calls someone a grammar nazi because they pointed out bad spelling. Gosh how pedantic can I get?

Your second sentence in this paragraph is a fragment.

For instance, if I get called out for any grammatical error in this thread, I will take off my hat to you. I like to learn, and that includes being corrected. :)

Take your hat off to Word. I cheated and copied your post to Word and used the grammar checker.

So come on, what's your pet hate grammatical mistake?

I remember a long time ago in high school, I realised that people were using the word, "good" as an adverb. "Good" is an adjective. "Well" is the adverb.

Correct. :)

Never. I find that grammar checker... let's just say, not always very good. "Consider revising," it says. And then some of the suggestions it makes are the most ridiculous nonsense - they can at times literally make no sense. Annoyingly stupid, actually. (I know, another fragment :))

I don't find fragments annoying, really. Unless they're used too often. ;)

Cheers. That's a good distinction to make. "Well" is also an adjective, but "good" is only an adjective (well, apart from also being a noun.)

grammar Nazi - Wiktionary

That just about sums it up in my opinion.

I'm certainly not a grammar Nazi, because I don't criticise others for errors in their grammar or spelling.

What I am guilty of is taking care to try and ensure that my grammar and spelling are without error. If anybody takes exception to that......tough shit, I couldn't care less !!:)

The correct plural form of galaxy is galaxies. So what about if it's a proper noun or a trademark, as in Samsung Galaxy. Is that Samsung Galaxys or Samsung Galaxies?

I THINK it should be Samsung Galaxys. Some very vague memory from elementary school tells me that proper nouns don't follow the normal rules for plurals. But, since this is a grammar nazi thread...I expect to be picked apart!
