Camera Lense W/O using a case?

Anyone NOT using a case (or using the Samsung flip case) notice if the lense is protected enough? I ask because I didn't have a case for my EVO and the lense scratched really bad. The Note2 looks like the lense is a little bit recessed, but not sure if it is recessed enough? What's your thoughts on this?

do any cases actually have an outer shell over the lense? the lense looks pretty vulnerable really in all cases, does it too have gorilla glass?

I use the Samsung flip case. The lens is recessed. When my phone is in use, the flip is held towards the back; resting on the back of the phone and when I lay it down, it's flip side down.
When the flip is closed, I turn the phone over so the flip is what's touching the surface wherever it sits.

I just don't ever lay a phone down on the back becaue I don't want my camera damaged. Been doing this for years.

 I could have sworn you were part of the gorilla glass convo from another thread. You don't have to ask about gorilla glass in every thread you're in.
