Root Camera not working after root

Hey! I recently rooted my desire. I have since tried various roms and the camera worked in none of them. I've tried changing kernel and radio to no avail; camera still shows black screen and force close dialog after maybe 15 seconds.

FYI my current radio version is 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.23, my current kernel version is 2.6.38.4 (GingerVillain) and right now I have miui installed.

I googled around and searched the forums but didn't find anything which helped me solve the problem. I'm a bit of a noob at this and I am now stumped so any help somebody could offer would be appreciated please :)

Thanks for the reply :) I just tried two different camera apps from market. Both produced the same result i.e. black screen.

Edit: I just realised that the camera flash/torch and led notifications appear to not be working either. Not sure if it's related but I'll mention for completeness.

I restored my contacts from a .vcf file. When putting a new rom on my steps have been as such:

1. Partition sd-card appropriately if required by rom.
2. Format sd-card
3. Copy all zips for flashing to fat partition of the sd-card.
4. Boot into recovery. Repeatedly erase all user data, dalvik cache etc.
5. Flash the new rom.
(I did this step 6 both before and after booting as normal on different attempts after installing new rom to see if it made a difference - it didn't) 6. Flash any new radio or kernel.
7. Boot as normal.

Sorry I think I might not have made myself sufficiently clear with one of my responses. I was able to *flash* the sense rom with no hitches and the rom itself worked fine *except* the camera still didn't work :/

I checked the meaning of ruu but I'm still not entirely clear what it entails. Any chance you could point me in the right direction of a tutorial to get me up to speed please? What is an "ruu rom" and what significance does it have for my camera problem?

Thanks again for the responses guys :)

An RUU (rom upgrade utility), is an exe program that runs in windows. Simply plug phone into computer and follow on screen instructions. Backup anything important first as it will wipe your phone. You will also have to root again afterwards. It will essentially return your phone to stock,ie as you had it out of the box. RUU's can be found at shipped roms. I would be inclined to try the official upgrade at the bottom of the list.

I'm puzzled.
If you're back to stock and the camera still doesn't work, does that not mean hardware issue?

Yes Shauny is right Tyseyh I haven't done the ruu yet. Thanks again guys for the responses and for your patience. I'll be suprised if it is a hardware failure due to the fact that it was working fine immediately before rooting/flashing and was no longer working immediately after. Of course correlation does not equal causation so I'll do the ruu tonight - cross your fingers, toes and miscellaneous appendages for me please :)

I agree that if it doesn't work after an RUU then hardware is the only thing left, however unlikely.

But flashing a ROM replaces all camera related software. So as long as you are using any Froyo radio, flashing a ROM and *nothing else* should give you a working camera. Flashing a kernel afterwards might get it wrong, but the kernel that's in the ROM should be right. And while an experimental rom may have a non-working camera, all roms being this way is very odd indeed.

I successfully ran the ruu. I've confirmed that there has not been a hardware failure - the camera is now working. Now to root again and see if it can be made to work with a different rom :) Thanks for all your assistance so far. Hopefully I wont need any more help but either way I will report back in case the conclusion of this episode is of any use to somebody and also to satisfy the curiosity of anybody who has been following this thread.

Woohoo! After running the ruu, rooting again and flashing miui my camera is working! :)

Only problem is the flashlight is still buggered. Thing is, it also didn't work with the stock rom that the ruu installed. Is it safe to assume that, as unlikely as it seems, a hardware failure of the flashlight has just happened to occur at the same time that I rooted and flashed a custom rom? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

On another point, my experience here has been awesome. I've never come to a forum looking for assistance where people have replied to my posts so promptly and have been so willing to see my problem through to the resolution. I may even stick around as I now feel qualified to answer a few questions others might have after throwing myself in at the deep end and, with your help, finally solving the problem (and a few other problems I caused and fixed along the way including getting the phone stuck in a bootloop and getting stuck on the screen with the htc logo and the warning triangles - I didn't tell you guys about that part :p) . So, /salute to the community you have here.

Your welcome, we're a friendly bunch here and all help each other. I've made some good friends here myself. :)
