Help Camera review from real owners

Now that people have the phone in their hands how do they feel about the camera? Is it hit or miss like every other phone before? I want to take pictures of moving objects (my kids). All of my phones before had such motion blur. Even the slightest movement of their face would blur the pictures.

How have people found this phone for taking pictures in less than perfect conditions, like indoors ect.

Also considering the galaxy note. Currently using the Samsung infuse. Not terrible camera but overall not reliable with slow shutter lags.

Thanks all

The camera is fantastic, believe the hype. I take lots of pics of my dogs and the burst feature is awesome. As is taking pics from a video you just shot.

If you're looking for a good camera on your phone you won't do better than the One X.

The camera is good from the point of view of UI, features and shutter speed, however the images resolve less detail and have more noise and colour error than a number of other Android cameras including the S2 and Note. Hopefully HTC can improve this with software updates though, as the sensor is better than the stock camera shots would have you believe - for example if you take low light shots with camera apps from the Play Store you can see them resolving a lot more detail (confirmed by a number of users now). Video is disappointing with a poor 10mbps bitrate although I definitely expect HTC to improve on this as that's what they did with the Sensation's video capture which started off quite poor on the release firmware.

I think overall most users will be very satisfied with the One X camera, but don't buy into the hype and hyperbole like the above. All you need do is check out photos as full zoom to see that the image quality isn't quite there yet (the GSMarena photo comparison tool is a good way to check this out). You can most certainly do better than the One X in the camera department, even much better (N8/Pure View), although in the Android realm I think it's mix of features/UI/quality is hard to beat with very few exceptions.

so you are an owner then of the One X? what do you like about it???

Let's keep this thread to pictures as the op requested. :)

Other threads and private messaging is ok for other subjects. Cheers, thanks! :) ;)

was mainly trying to keep the posts in line with op as it's for real owners and I didn't see that he actually mentioned owning the phone from this or other posts...was also asking what was liked about the camera and pics from it, if he owned one. should've rephrased it...;)

Like yourself, I've a young lad and I find it very hard to take a picture of him doing something cool without it blurring. Whilst the camera isn't perfect for this, out of all the phone cameras I've used, the One X has highest percentage of usable shots compared to the rest. Burst mode is also an excellent feature. Colour wise, I've found it's slightly muted, but you can still get some decent shots and it's only when you transfer to the PC you notice any issues with colour and I'm sure this could be sorted with a bit of photoshop jiggery-pokery. That being said, it's virtually overcast here ALL the time so that probably doesn't help things.

There's a few sample shots here and a sample video a couple of posts below. I know in that post I said it's not great for moving objects, but that was pre software update which looks to have improved things. I can also upload some shots taken inside if you like.

All in all, it is an excellent phone camera, but only an above average digital camera (if you get what I mean).

Edit: One very nifty feature is that if you open the camera directly from the lock screen and have a PIN/Passcode setup, it bypasses that and takes you straight to the camera. It then asks you for your PIN when you exit the camera app.

I own a One X, and a Note, and I owned an S2 (and a GNex, and a Razr, and a Sensation - I can talk about and compare most international flagships from the point of view of having been an actual user). He asked for actual owners opinions, if I wasn't an owner I wouldn't have opined. Anyone who tells you the One X has the best phone camera is ignorant of the alternatives and/or hasn't looked at full zoom comparisons between it's camera and other good phone cameras. Don't get caught up the negative facts in my comment though, look at the conclusion - I still think as a complete package it's very good.

(although it's not a regular users review I'd recommend checking out the GSMarena review and their photo comparison tool if you want to get good examples of what I'm talking about)

thanks for that. my original question still applies then. what DO you like about the cam, if anything. what are its strong points in your opinion??? I'm assuming you've taken some shots of your own with it. if possible perhaps you could post some real world shots from a real user as I haven't seen too many of those and would appreciate seeing more...TIA

I mentioned some of the things I like, but in detail:

Startup speed/Shutter speed/shot to shot speed - excellent

Great feature set - burst mode is excellent, HDR is there, filters inbuilt (the depth of field one I particularly like), taking shots during video capture is awesome (a feature I've really appreciated in my standalone and wanted to see in my mobiles)

Very good UI - settings and alternate shooting modes readily accessible, video and still capture buttons always represented onscreen (I really, really like this, no waiting another second after starting the camera app for it to switch modes)

This One X camera marks quite a big step up in the camera department for the HTC.

I'm writing a review for the Telecom Tech Blog here in NZ, camera review will be my next piece (sometime this week), so plenty of example shots available soon. Some of the other users have already done pieces on the camera. For good example shots the GSMarena review and Allaboutsymbian shootout Vs the N8 are well worth a look too.

You seem more willing to publish your blog address rather shots from the One X, and this is the second thread that you've talked about the gsmarena tool without a link.

The OP didn't ask for blog reviews, but user impressions on PICTURE QUALITY.

So, we're going to limit this thread to that.

For those curious, and for equal time, here's the comparison page for the One X and the SGS2.

Photo Compare Tool - GSMArena.com

I hardly see the point, unless the op changes his mind and wants to pursue that direction.

Cheers, thanks. :)

I've owned the One X for over a month now, and I can say the camera has not disappointed me.

The start up speed of the camera is amazing, roughly around 0.5 seconds or so, and another 0.5 seconds before I get my first shot. Even from the lockscreen to the camera is incredibly fast as well. Focus is swift and quick, and the 2.0 aperture really sets it apart from other mobile phone camera lenses. The angle is pretty wide, and I can manage to fit everything I want in a single picture.

Some photos might come out a bit noisier than others, but that's not really a big deal, as the built-in editing feature seems to do most of the job of fixing photos up in terms of noise, brightness, contrast, saturation..etc.

As with pictures with subjects in motion, I haven't really got around to really taking any action shots yet, but I have experimented with my friends. The subjects don't come out as clear and sharp, and still tend to look blurry, but its acceptable, depending on your needs.

Video shooting is a satisfying experience, colors are correct and vivid, and the playback is smooth as well. Even in lowlight conditions the videos look great. A feature of video shooting is 'Slow motion', and I got a few chances to play around with it. The effect is really really superb, however, the trade off of shooting slow motion videos is the quality. The quality gets turned down to a point where a face will get blurred, or focus will change on different subjects. Not sure why this happens, but still, shooting a video with slow motion effects is pretty fun for shits and giggles (can i say that?).

Anyways, here are some still shots I took, most of these are edited with a filter from the built-in edit feature I think..

Edit: In the third picture (pool playing), you can clearly tell the right arm is in motion while I snapped the shot. This is what I meant when I said the subject will still come out a bit blurry, but it isn't bad. Plus the camera still managed to capture the rest of the photo with great clarity.
