Help Camera shutter sound off/on?

what you can do, is pull down the notifications bar, and put your phone on silent mode. that kills all the sounds.

i guess thats the easiest way to go about this, without having to download another app or root your phone..

This does not work with all phones. It will not work with a Sprint GS3. With Sprint you have to use a different camera app, or root your phone. I use a camera app.

can this be done without rooting? i'm in the file directory for the audio files but it wont let me delete the sound files.

No, the system partition is read only until you root. Rooting allows you to alter the system partition, or delete files.

To be honest, I couldn't find this either, for a while. Under phone settings make sure you scroll down/down/down towards the bottom of the list.

New to Android, so at first I didn't realize the setting list finger-scrolled any further down than what was initially shown.

If you are rooted then you can enable the shutter sound menu item by adding
Code:
<CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>true</CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>
to /system/csc/feature.xml (or changing false to true if it isn't already there).

This worked for me on a UK international SGS3.

I did this in the U.S. on a Sprint SPH-L710 and it did put the option to turn off the shutter sound but whether you choose on or off it still makes the sound when you take a picture.

In ES settings -> root settings, the 3rd box down where it says "mount file system" needs to be checked. That should give you the ability to edit or delete system files

Hmm, changed the settings, was able to delete the .ogg files (I no longer see them), but the camera still makes a shutter sound.

Appreciate the help, though.

There are a couple, I think another called camera_shutter or something like that. If you delete the right file it is impossible for your camera to ever make the sound because there is sound to play.

You could do it by trial and error. Just rename a file and see if the camera still makes noise. If it does change the name back and try another until you find the right one.

Also you may need to reboot and clear your cache before the sound won't play anymore, just an idea...

Found it! It was "Shutter.org". Thanks again :D

Having updated to Jelly Bean, I no longer see the feature.xml file, so apparently it's moved or gone. As mentioned by others, there are now sound files cam*.ogg and shuttter*.ogg, so rename all of them to be safe.

For those on Sprint here is a fix without root.

Download the linked file. Its a exe file in a 7z archive so extract it. Go to where you extracted it. Put phone in download mode (vol-dn+home+pwr) plug into PC and run the Odin one click exe. Will take about 10-15 mins then you should see the camera sound toggle in the setting menu. It works and won't mess up your phone.

It's really interesting how it vary.
My Malaysian version of S3 and Note 2 will off the shutter if I turn the phone to mute via notification. It became common practice that when I do photos in public, I just mute it for a while, not to attract attention to the sound.

And I don't mean using it for evil :)

The device is unlock, off the shelve from Samsung store, not confined to any carrier.

Have option to turn off/on shutter sound (only works for camera, find out for camcorder), allowing to take picture while on call (only works for camera, find out for camcorder)

Go to /system/csc/feature.xml

Change from RO to RW in Root Explorer

Open in Text Editor

Look for the lines:
<CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>true</CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>
&
<CscFeature_Camera_EnableCameraDuringCall>false</CscFeature_Camera_EnableCameraDuringCall>

Change all the "false" to "true"

Make sure permissions on the file are rw- r-- r--

Restart phone

I have the ATTi747 non-rooted but Unlocked and I have the option for shutter sound on or off in my camera menu. On my Unlocked GS 2, I download an app called "earpiece" which was a bit tricky but disabled the shutter sound for the camera.

This option is carrier specific

Sprint sgsIII does not have this option but default unless you root and edit file

How do I turn off the camera shutter sound when taking a photo in the Galaxy S3?
I can't seem to locate the on/off shutter sound in the settings. Best I can do is mute entire phone which is not practical.
thanks

open the camera app
touch the "Gear" looking icon next to the stick with the light on the top icon
you'll see a drop down menu
scroll waaayyy down and 4th from the bottom is "Shutter sound"
it toggles, on or off

Good Luck & Aloha!
