i am looking at buying an a500 for my son. but he is in advanced english classes in highschool and has to be able to type up his papers on it or i'll have to get him a laptop instead. Im looking for microsoft word of some sort that lets him produce mla format. or can i just download a mla program? i dont really care how, but does anyone know of ANY way to get mla format on one of these.

The A500 is great but I wouldn't want to type a whole paper with it. You would need a keyboard dock and the Asus Transformer might be better for that. You will also need to consider how he will print his assignments, I haven't looked into Android printing options before.

The Iconia comes with the DocsToGo app that lets you view office files, and you can purchase the full version to create files.

You don't need a Transformer, the A500 will use any USB or bluetooth keyboard just fine.

I have DocsToGo on my Tablet and QuickOffice on my phone. I think both of them are okay for doing simple changes. IMO, if your child needs office, then I would get them a laptop. While these Android apps are useful, they are not Microsoft Office. Again, just my opinion.

I would agree with evilesysz3.The android tablets are new and not as easy to set up with some of the popular windows apps even though there are alot of apps being put out every day. I think it would be easier to use the laptop and he would have a keyboard to type on. I got my daughter a Toshiba laptop for collage that was almost the size of a net book but It is a full blown laptop just smaller. With DVD burner and all the things you find in a larger laptop. Shes had it a year and loves it.

A tablet does not do a good job for any extended data entry. In addition, the applications available for it (such as Documents To Go), do not handle footers, headers et cetera. I use DTG extensively on my Evo and Acer 500. When anything requiring extended use comes along, I either use my netbook or a full-sized laptop. Printing: I have an HP wireless printer and use their net-based printing service.

Actually they have a keyboard that the base of the tablet hooks into and allows it to sit like a desktop with mouse. As far as Word apps go, there are several on the market. Most if not all have headers and footers. I have to use Word for documents and have been using a free app called Olive Office Pro.
There are also apps that allow printing, scanning, etc. From my understanding this works in the same way the bar code scanner does. Printing will probably need some type of network access but I can not say for sure.

If you are interested I would suggest looking at the Android Market which can be found by typing that into Google. On the market try searching for office, word and print. This should show you the apps available. I would also type Acer Iconia accessories into Google and seeing what they have. This tablet is fairly new and they are still developing for it. It is not the tail end of a trend, but right in the beginning.
