Can I modify screen resolution?

I've recently bought an MID with a 16:9 screen, however, the resolution has been set to 800*400 (15:9), resulting in a slightly horizontally stretched display. Would it be possible to reset the resolution to 854*480 (16:9) which may be the native resolution for the screen? I've been searching for the answer, but not yet found any clue. Anyone here know how? Thanks a lot for your attention! Android ver. 2.1
 
I believe changing the lcd density in the buildprop will give you the desired results however it requires root to write to the system file
