Can I remove HTC's Email client and just use Gmail?

Good day Gentlemen,

About a year ago I had trouble with my rooted Hero loosing it's internal memory. It slowly was eaten up over time until I was getting warning messages. Did all the usual battles with cache and the like and finally flashed the current stock rom that has given me great service ever since. Well in this last year I have watched my internal memory slowly go away just like before. I think when I first flashed the phone I started out with about 80 GB's and now I'm down to 13 GB's. My suspicion back then was the stock HTC email client was some how storing or keeping discarded email as that is the only thing that is continually coming into the phone on a regular basis and could clog up my memory at this slow and consistent rate.

Okay, with all that said about three weeks ago I posted a thread about the HTC email client not downloading or sending my Gmail. It would and still is working for my dslextreme mail account. So I fired up the Gmail email client and I actually like it better then the HTC email. So I want to ask this question. Will the Gmail email client handle other email accounts other then just Gmail? And then if it will can I just delete the HTC email client off my phone completely and maybe at the same time get rid of the hidden load of deleted and "trashed" email?

Just a thought and I wanted to ask the question. The phone is starting just now to slow down again and it's the lack of memory starting to raise it's ugly head.

I have my school email non Gmail forwarded to my Gmail account on. My phone and I have problems with it that way and haven't used any other email client so if you can set up forwarding I would and just get rid of HTC client via titanium backup

Regarding getting rid of the messages, I'll leave that up to the nice folks in your forum. Regarding deleting the app, it is safer to just rename the apk to apk.bak. It will act just like deleting it (it won't load or show in your app drawer) but if your phone starts acting flaky because this app isn't around, it is simple to restore.
 
Great idea and I'll give it a try. But do you think this may leave what I think are old deleted emails in memory?

Yes, and I hope the folks here can find an answer for you. I saw a similar issue on another HTC thread. I'll try to look it up and see if I can get a solution for you. I use a Galaxy Nexus, so I'm not very familiar with Sense.

You can rename the app as stated above or just back it up and freeze it via Titanium Backup. The latter is less of a hassle in my opinion since you do not have to go searching for the specific .apk file to rename.

You could also try an alternate email client. I like K-9 Mail which can be found here: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.fsck.k9&hl=en . I hope this helps.

How is k-9 I have herd some OK things and some very bad things about them in the past week or so
 
I appreciate the advice but what I really want to know is can the HTC email client be removed? The main purpose is to remove that program completely as I "think" it's holding old email for some reason and using up my memory. But I will try the suggestions as I will at least move away from the HTC email and if my theory is correct preserve the 13 gb's of internal memory that I have left.

I had a similar issue and decided to switch to K-9. What worked for me was just deleting the accounts in the HTC client and then setting them up in K-9. That seemed to clear up the memory issue for me.
 
So you cleared the accounts, cache and data and moved over to K-9 and just left the HTC Client on your phone? Did you gain memory when you did this? Now I'm moving in the right direction then...............

As stated above, I suggested that you back up the HTC E-Mail Client first. After that, you can either "freeze" it or remove it completely. Everything can be accomplished with Titanium Backup. It is available on the Android Market.

I am not sure how you have 13 GB of internal storage. I think you must be thinking of your microSD card if you happen to have a 16 GB one, that is. The Sprint HTC Hero normally only has 120 MB or a bit more or a bit less of internal storage free. Clearing the cache should, in theory, free up any internal storage that the HTC E-Mail Client is holding onto.

Will also Nandroid the phone before I do anything. That way I'll be doubly backed up..............

I have never had an issue with K-9 Mail. What bad things have you heard about it? :eek:

I am actually on the stock email client at the moment though. After a recent new ROM flash, I have been too busy to restore the Titanium Backup of my app settings lately. ;)

just an opinion but i have learned that freezing the app for a few days and seeing if it effects any other running programs or apps before deleting anything is the best route. helps you determine if deleteing the app will effect anything else on your phone. and if not..hit that delete button and get it off your phone...no point in keeping apps that are useless to you.
