Root Can i root a new Eris?

I have 1.49

So do I and I rooted from 2.1 OTA with no problems.

I never checked before rooting, though; I suppose I should assume the 1.49 came along with the rooted ROM, although I'm not sure.

I'm on my 3rd ROM now and having a blast with root (particularly satisfying getting rid of YouTube, Peep and other not-needed apps in the app drawer).

Yes, you should assume that. The replacement of the bootloader is the very first thing that happens in the rooting process. You probably had v. 1.46.something or 1.47.something before you started the root process.

The Root-ROM installs the bootloader v. 1.49.2000 (S-OFF), whereas the bootloader which locks people out of root is v.1.49.0000 (S-ON).

Note that you see it widely (mis-)stated that the root ROM can not replace a leak ROM (true) because the "bootloader version is older" (false). That's a bit unfortunate, because it confuses folks who actually look at the details.

1.49.2000 = Root-ROM bootloader
1.49.0000 = leak/unrootable bootloader
