Root can i root my evo?

So I got my evo a few weeks ago and have been reading about rooting since then. I followed the rooting guide but nothing happens. When i try to go into recovery my phone displays an exclamation mark which i assume is an error sign. Any tips? Is my phone even rootable? How do i tell? Thanks.

Now if you want to know if your phone is rootable, you need to turn your phone off. Once it is off, power it back on holding the volume down button and power at the same tame. It will take you to a white screen with little androids on skateboards. At the very top look and see what hboot version you. .97 and below is rootable via unrevoked. Hboot 2.02 and 2.10 are not. There is a manual method you will have to follow in order to obtain root. If you are brand new I strongly recommend not rooting with the manual method.
