So I got this phone 2 days ago, its on orange, although the phone itself should be unlocked. I've been reading this guide:
unrevoked

Can I use that to root my device, and also, what is a GoldCard and should I create one, if yes, how would I do that.

Thanks for all the help guys I really appreciate it!
Brady :)

You don't need a goldcard to root your desire using unrevoked. A goldcard lets you flash different ROMs onto your phone, and is a very useful thing to have lying around in case you get into difficulties when flashing ROMs.

If all you want to do is root your phone using unrevoked, so you can install apps which need root, and you're keeping the phone on the standard Orange-branded ROM, then you don't really need a goldcard.

Since your phone is a PVT4, there are a couple of things you have to do differently with unrevoked. You must check the erase size of the phone. If it's 40000, then you will have to use the AmonRA image instead of the one built in to Unrevoked. You should also use the 3.21 version of Unrevoked, rather than the latest one. It's all in the FAQ - read it carefully, several times!

Remember that rooting your Orange phone, debranding or flashing custom ROMs will void the warranty, and there is no way I know of to return an Orange branded phone back to its factory condition.

Finally, I followed all the advice in the FAQ, and still failed to root my nearly new Orange branded desire using unrevoked. Your phone specs aren't identical to mine, but they're pretty close. I'm currently trying root by downgrading the phone operating system, and then rooting the downgraded system. For that I think I will need a goldcard. So all is not lost if unrevoked doesn't work for you. The people here are very helpful :)

You can flash roms without a goldcard! A goldcard gets you past the phones CID check, which you'll likely need if something goes very wrong.

Don't hesitate, make a goldcard.

Interesting - I thought you couldn't flash a ROM on a branded phone without one. Particularly Orange-branded, as there are no official ROMs available for it.

If you are only rooting using unrevoked, what are the possible uses of a goldcard?

I'll have to read up more on goldcards, flashing, debranding...

You can flash as many custom roms as you like. You cannot use official unbranded roms on a branded device without a goldcard.

GOldcard is a recovery measure incase you need to repair the phone with an official rom.
