Can I stop paying $5/mo for text and use google voice to get texts on my main number? Or, does GV only work on the goggle phone number?

You can text all you want using Google Voice on your phone. Just associate your cell phone number with your GV number.

If someone texts you, they need to send the text to your GV number, and you'll need to text through GV. I use it, and it works just fine.

Just remember, GV is text only... no mms.

True, but if they are sending out pics, their phone should be able to receive emails as well which would also work for sending attachments. The biggest deal with it is having people call on one number and sending text to another. If they call you on the Google Voice number you can't take advantage of Mobile to Mobile... Kind of a trade-off.. Even though I have a Google Voice number, I haven't made the leap to have all my calls routed through GV. I do use it for my Voice Mail though. Gives you the advantage of transcription and listening if you chose. No waste of minutes calling back your VM number through Verizon. Kind of like Visual Voicemail, just through GV.

Iuse it and love it, there a are a few gliches that are well worth it- e.g- occasional failure to send- it will notify you immediately if it does not go through and you resend. You send via send or the "entry arrow" on the lower keft keyboard which is occasionally hit by accident- may be the same for VZW- make sure you call VZW and block texts on your VZW number. I like the separate goog number to give to people that I don't want to have y "real" cell number. Also, Google voice is instant and you get an email with a transcript. VZW voicemails sometimes take several hours to show up. I think of it like this, it is not my responsibility to provide dividends for VZW shareholders especially when there is an excellent alternative.

Indeed, I have completely turned off text messaging on my phone and only use my google voice number for it. I made an announcement on facebook saying as much, and, well, if someone texts me and I don't get it, they'll probably call later asking about it anyway.

For me, it's a matter of principle. I spend $30 per month on an unlimited data plan. Text messaging is data, ergo, I am not willing to pay a penny more for it.

I use it all the time as well. The main deal I have is picture messaging. I just wish it worked so that you could get it as an email attachment or something. If they're sending a picture I have to give them my verizon number in order to receive and explain to them why I have 2 numbers every time. Gets a bit repetitive.

I am assuming that GV is really only useful for smartphones correct? Because the only way to receive the text message on a non smartphone would be to have the message sent to the cell phone which still charges for a text I assume, correct?

I think this is true....
