Can i use ROM MANAGER if a am not rooted?

Will i be able to backup my Orange branded Desire ROM with ROM MANAGER if i did NOT root it????
i need the backup in case i will need the warranty!

I am curently on eclair 2.1, so what i need to do is to debrand my Desire and to make a backup so i case i need the warranty i restore my orange rom.

Well i think i should do these steps:
1. Root the phone with unrevoked.
2. Install ROM manager and backup everything.
3. Folow this thread http://androidforums.com/htc-desire/148932-froyo-ruu-update-available.html

to update to froyo with the ability of OTA Updates.
4. Update to the last version.
5. and root the phone one more time because this type of debranding wil unroot it.

So my questions will be :
1. If i will root it at this step will i be able to recieve OTA updates?

2. If i will install ROM manager at this state, will i be able to restore the orange branded rom?? or i dont need to instal the rom manager at all to restore?

thing is, ROM manager will only back up the NAND. If you root, you replace recovery too. Using your ROM manager backup will not return it to stock, so would not be valid for a warranty return.

If you root, there is a way to get back to original firmware if you have an AMOLED desire, but not if its SLCD

And no OTA's on rooted roms.

Yes, but there are no UK orange RUUs available. The method to return an Orange handset to stock is uniquely specialised and only supports AMOLED

Gotcha, having an unlocked/unbranded phone didn't think about the RUU being for Orange, only thought about the HTC one.

I'll keep quite next time, Taxi!!!!!

Well i will check a few days if its working fine because a just get it, and if everything is OK i think i will ... start the process :)

most people would consider this a god send really....orange is terrible with UI firmware changes etc...just terrible lol

Oh I know. They really know how to f**k over an operating system. I bought my fiance a hero. I had to root / custom rom it just so it would accept the network unlock code.

Its just in a warranty situation you may need to return to stock.

So you can return a rooted Orange phone to stock if it has an AMOLED screen?

How do you tell AMOLED from SLCD?

(Thinking about rooting, but nervous...)

If you have just got your unit then it's SLCD, if you got it in the summer or earlier last year it'll probably be AMOLED but there's no sure way of telling without getting a magnifying glass out

If it was sealed from astore though, it would say amoled on the box under screen type. SLCD screens do not show anything

the last 'orange' phone I has was an LG Renoir back in '09....it was TERRIBLE....I got another one briefly last year with NO branding on it....was actually a good phone lol

Still not fool proof though, could have been incorrectly packed in the factory, or if you bought it second hand...

Looking for screen bleed probably is the best way :)

yea wasnt there something about having a black wallpaper on the screen and seeing the colour balance or something?

i think so. if it bleeds around the edge, then its slcd or something. I havent seen an slcd one so cant say for sure.

Bought it sealed in the box, from an Orange shop, in September...

I'll try the screen bleed thing :?
