Root Can Only Boot Into HBOOT Menu - Volume Buttons Faulty?

I went out for a run this morning with my Desire and it got a bit, (but not very), wet. When I got home it was behaving strangely including the volume level changing by itself. I took the battery out, gave everything a good dry and put it in the airing cupboard for an hour assuming that this would completely dry it out.

Hi Bob,

The procedure there should work. You can download the downgrader as a hboot img rather than PB99IMG.zip if you prefer, in which case you fastboot flash it rather than install through hboot. The downgrader is needed before running the RUU in order to return to S-On.

Warranties don't generally cover moisture damage - did you explain the circumstances to them? There are moisture indicators in the phone so they will know if it got wet, and may refuse warranty if so.

The recommended drying technique is to remove the battery and put the phone in a bag of uncooked rice for a couple of days - using heat to dry is not advisable. Don't know whether it will still help, but may be worth a try.

I turned it on again this morning and it booted up ok. Also the volume buttons seem to be working again so fingers crossed it looks like it
 
Hi Bob,

If you need to restore to stock the procedure is downgrader hboot followed by RUU. The sole purpose of the downgrader hboot is that the RUU can replace it with a stock one (other current S-Off hboots are not replaced by RUUs, so if you run an RUU without this you will still be S-Off).

The RUU will replace the ROM too, so no real point doing a nandroid restore before running the RUU.

I spoke too soon, it’s gone again. This time though I can only get in to the HBOOT screen – the volume buttons don’t work at all so I can’t get in to recovery or FASTBOOT. If I can’t get in to FASTBOOT am I stuck, the instructions require this for running the RRU?

Also please could someone advise which RRU I would need for a UK T-Mobile Desire, originally on Froyo?

Hi Bob,

That's exactly what happens if the volume button sticks "on" - volume down while booting takes you to hboot, and if you can't release the button it doesn't register a new press and so you can't navigate the menu.

The top item on the hboot menu is fastboot, and when I boot into hboot that is already highlighted. So can you select fastboot using the power button?

For a TMO UK RUU I'd suggest RUU_Bravo_Froyo_TMO_UK_2.12.110.4_R_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_157560_signed.zip, from shipped-ROMs. The official 2.3 upgrade is also possible if that doesn't work for any reason.

The moisture indicators aren't too sensitive, I've had my Desire in my pocket while bicycling. And it has been redicilously wet many many times. When I had to take it fixed under warranty, there was no problems. Good luck running that RUU.

When I boot the phone the FASTBOOT option is highlighted but the power button has no effect.

Hmm, not nice. I tried to emulate the problem by not releasing my volume button and was still able to use power to select, so had hoped it would work.

It's still that way 10-15 seconds later, after the messages about not finding various zip files have flashed past?

You can boot directly into fastboot by booting while pressing the back button down, but in my own experiments the volume keys take precedence so that might not work. Maybe worth trying though.

There is a trick to extract a PB99IMG.zip from the RUU, which is one of the zips that hboot looks for. This lets you run the RUU from the SD card without putting the phone in fastboot mode. The procedure is described briefly in this post. The catch is that you still have to confirm that you want to do it, so if the phone isn't recognising power button input that may not be possible.

Otherwise I'm struggling to think of anything other than fiddling with the volume keys in the hope it will change, which you will have been doing all along.

Sorry, more help needed.

I’ve downloaded http://alpharev.nl/PB99IMG_downgrade.zip and renamed it to PB99IMG.zip (I’ve double checked that it’s not .zip.zip). I’ve copied PB99IMG.zip to the root of my SD card but when I boot the phone it says:

HBOOT
Parsing ... [SD ZIP]
[1] BOOTLOADER

and then just hangs (I’ve left it for 5 minutes).

Any ideas?

Been a while since I did this using PB99IMG.zip, but it sounds like I feared: you need to confirm that you want to apply the update, which requires it to respond to the power button. :(

I agree that this is clearly a hardware problem and nothing to do with the software mods. What I can't guarantee is how the repair centre will respond - the presence of a custom hboot is sufficient to void the warranty, so although it's nothing to do with this problem they would be within their rights to refuse.
 
Hi all, am a NOOB with Android although have flashed phones on Symbian before.
My partner's HTC Desire is stuck on the HTC Andy skateboarding splash screen after she went for a run.

Without the SD card in, the computer (Win Vista) recognises the device although can't locate the Android 1.0 driver.

It says HBOOT USB PLUG on the screen.

I added a PB99IMG.ZIP to the SD Card, and with the SD Card in, a loading bar appears in the top right corner.

The main screen states:

Originally this phone was on Orange UK.
Have downloaded ADB and FastBoot loader, but without the laptop recognising the phone, am struggling for ideas.
The Volume keys don't work, and the power button doesn't select.
have been trying to figure it out for the last couple of days, but am starting to feel like I'm going in circles.
Help please!!!!!!

Hi James, and welcome to AF :)

Stuck "after she went for a run" doesn't sound good - sounds more likely to be electrical or mechanical damage (e.g. getting wet or being dropped) than software, and an RUU will only help with software. The buttons not responding when in the hboot screen is also a bad sign.

See whether you can unjam the volume key (if it's got stuck it could produce the symptoms you are seeing).

For software, best I can suggest is that you try downloading the hboot drivers from the link in this thread, and see whether that helps. If it does you may be able to run an RUU in .exe form (does the same as that PB99IMG.zip), though you may have to get the phone into fastboot mode first (mine does that automatically if you boot into hboot while connected to usb, so may be worth trying connecting then booting). But if it's mechanical or moisture damage I'm afraid it won't help.
