So I printed out all the directions on the "dummies guide to rooting"...Directions seem great, I am the idiot.
My first attempt was an epic fail, and I guess I am lucky my phone still works and is not a paper weight..lol.
First thing i did was back up my apps with App list back up, and moved them to my sd card.
Step 1...factory data reset...I didn't do because I was worried I would lose all my contacts. My phone is not synced with my computer, so my contacts are not backed up on my computer. I did move them to my sd card....BUT the next step was to format sd card....
Step2...format sd card. See step one, I was worried I would lose my apps and contacts.
Step 3....remove previous unrevoked files...no problem, I didn't have any.
Step 4....no problem
Step 5....no problem
Step 6....no problem
Step 7....remove HTC sync. Never installed HTC sync software on my computer so this wasn't a problem.
Step 8....reboot computer. Well I did this on my first attempt, but not on the second. Not sure if this screwed me up.
OH! And during my first attempt my SD card was removed from my phone. I read UNMOUNT card...so thats what I thought it meant. I screwed up here I think...! Later I put it back in and tried again, but I think I was in over my head at that point. Unrevoked 3 wouldn't recognize that the phone was plugged in at first.
ROOTING PROCEDURE
Step 1....Ok managed to do this.
Step 2....Installing drivers. Like I said the first time I tried this I may have screwed up...not having my sd card in. I thought everything was working, but Unrev 3 didn't recognize my phone plugged in. I put the card back in and did everything over and it recognized the phone being plugged in, BUT got stuck in "Rebooting into recovery"....don't know?
Step 3....fastboot. This seemed to work ok, but who knows.
Step 4....anitvirus off...I can do that..
Step 5....running Unrevoked 3. I am using XP pro, and I was able to run Unrev 3 but the first time it didn't work. Plugged SD card in did some things over...driver install...and it started to work, BUT seemed to get stuck after a while in "reboot to recovery". I waited awhile, maybe 20 min and panicked...I unplugged the phone and hit the power button...OMG. Well it came on and worked, but when I checked to see if it was rooted, I didn't see the message printed in the direction.
I have NO idea what I did to the phone...lol. I feel like such a tool...lol. I saw a 10 year old kid on youtube do better!
So guys what do I need to do? Do I need to wipe my phone clean and try again. If I do wipe the phone, how do I make sure I don't lose my contacts?
If I need to start over...how do I wipe the phone clean? Do I delete all the files/folders I made on my computer also, and start over?
Thanks so much guys for any help!
