Good Morning! I did a search on this subject, and I was wondering if there was any information out there for what you can do once you are rooted... Do you have a guide that describes these things:

#1 Once Rooted, what is the first thing you should do?

#2 Which Factory Sprint apps are safe to remove?

#3 If you are wi-fi tethering, what is the best app, and is it safe to turn on the sprint hotspot tick box, and not get charged 30.00 by sprint?

#4 is there a specific site or guide for adding roms safely and without blowing up your phone?

#5 does your carrier know whaen you have rooted your phone?

#6 My phone says I have an update available, is it safe to do sprint updates if you havent added a rom to your phone?

#7 what are the essential apps you need for a rooted phone in order to keep it running smoothly?

#8 What if you want to put it back to original factory settings? Do you have to go through some crazy hoo haa just like you did to root it?

#9 what do I these words mean? Root, RUU, Rom, SDK, and all of those other acronyms everyone is so fond of using, but never explaining what they mean for the new people... remember you werent all born with the ability to understand everything all at once without some help.

Wow, that is a lot of questions. I wont go through each individually....maybe others will help you there, but I can help point you in the right direction.

First up.. stickies are your friend. I recommend checking the stickies in this forum and also over at XDA forum (where all the developers hang out).

i second Wake69's answer to #7. I've been using SetCPU and been getting awesome battery life. ShootME is also pretty good (at least for showing stuff off on these forums ) and the SwitchPro widget has some root functionality as well (for rebooting straight into recovery)

Shoot me is in the market. Titanium backup is a great app, however it has some drawbacks. Remember a few things, before you make any changes do a nandroid backup. When upgrading a rom to a newer version, you will need to wipe both caches unless otherwise noted to do a full wipe. When swiching from one rom to a different rom, not upgrading you will always need to do a full wipe as well as wiping both caches. Third when staying in the same rom, you can restore files, apps and settings, but when changing roms you should only restore apps only, sometimes the settings will make things act funny. i also recommend using appsaver, this is available in the market and allows you to save the apk file foe all apps installed so you can just install from the apk files. Also, backup your sdcard on your computer at least 1 time per week, i had a sdcard go bad and did not have a recent backup and was in a bad place. have fun!

boot into recovery--and vol down to nandroid, hit power to select and it'll take care of the rest.

Im sorry, I did take this the wrong way. I am a 36 year old woman, whom has experience with several different operating systems, and I do my research, and I certainly know how to use "google", and how to input my search queries. I did not come here asking to get "my balls" busted, I came here to get answers to specific questions that were not explained clearly at many of the hundreds of sites there are full of jokers claiming they are so much superior to anyone else, and they should not have to take time out of thier most important lives (in mommies basements playing WoW, and drooling over the latest video cards, and getting doritoes caught in thier sweaty moobs) to help someone who is trying to learn something new. Most of these people only half explain techniques, and they leave important information out like the whole pressing the volume down, and the power button at the same time thing. I was not born with this information already in my head, If I were, I would be wealthy and driving a lotus and living in a mansion filled with 10 hot naked men serving me 24/7, but since I am not anything but a mere woman with "balls" mind you, and 5 children and a jerk for a husband, I just dont have 28 hours to spend searching and reading every cocky fools "better than thou posts". I came here kindly asking for help, and people have kindly helped, but then you get the people that sound like you have wasted thier precious web space, and that they will throw you a freaking bone by pointing out how obviously stupid you are. If it was such a problem for you to say anything, perhaps you should have said nothing at all. Download WiFi Tether from here (the latest version). If your phone is rooted it should work, if you installed the recent ota you have to reroot your phone as the update unrooted it.

If you dont have a barcode scanner go to the market and get one. You can scan the bar code on the web page to download it to your phone.

Right on harukasan73! I have been reading and searching this forum for weeks, I have asked several questions and I usually get really nice people answering my questions, but because they are technologically advanced, they assume I know the lingo. Many times I get a response with a link to another thread. When I read that thread it starts with simple instructions, but then in the next 5 or 6 posts there are several people adding, "Oh but don't for get to do this or that" and they typically don't explain what that is clearly or how to do it.
Over time, I have slowly figured out how to root, how to get WiFi tether to work. But after all the reading, flashing a rom is still not clear. I'm still not sure what to do after I flash. If I have "wiped" my phone, what do I have to do to get all my stuff back? Yes I understand what "Use titanium" means, but how? There is always a step that is not clear that makes me want to wait and read more.
I wish there were a quick guide for all of us who are missing pieces to this enormous puzzle. Many pages and post that explain things are several months old and do not talk to the specifics of the versions we have questions about. This makes having a current all inclusive set of complete instructions almost impossible.
There are lots of good people here that want to help. Many do try, and do help me. I continue to gain knowledge, as will you. Just ignore those who yell about using the search, even after you did. Good luck with this.

The problem I had was Pre 5/6/7/8 did not want to work for some reason but Pre9 worked ONLY on my two Windows 7 laptops. Neither Windows XP laptops would work that I tried. Maybe there is an issue with XP or some other thing that needs to be changed that is not covered anywhere.

#1 Once Rooted, what is the first thing you should do?

Do a Nandroid backup. Press and hold the power button to turn the phone off. Press and hold the volume down button and hold it, then press the power button to turn the phone on. Let go of the volume down button when you get to the screen with menu options. Using volume down, choose either BOOTLOADER then RECOVERY or simply choose RECOVERY (depending on what screen you are at, you either see bootloader or recovery, not both). and then press the power button. The phone will vibrate and change to another screen with a greenish text menu. Volume down to Nandroid and press power to select it. Make sure Backup is selected and press the power button. Wait 5 minutes or so for it to complete and then reboot by going back a screen and finding reboot.
Get familiar with this process. You should always nandroid backup before you flash a new rom because if you don't like the new rom you can use nandriod to restore the backup you made. Do not change the names of the backup files/folders on the SD card because it will probably give you an MD5 error when you try to restore and that's another crazy long fix. The backup file will be on your SD Card in the clockworkmod folder and another folder will have the date/time stamped in it.

#2 Which Factory Sprint apps are safe to remove?

Pick and choose the things you don't want. In Titanium Backup click on the Backup/Restore button on top. Then scroll through the list and find the obvious things you don't want, like Friend Stream, Amazon, NASCAR, etc. The names of the apps should make it obvious what to remove or not. Don't remove any Bluetooth stuff if you are going to use a BT headset. Don't remove any camera stuff if you are going to use the camera.

#3 If you are wi-fi tethering, what is the best app, and is it safe to turn on the sprint hotspot tick box, and not get charged 30.00 by sprint?

Already covered. Don't use the Sprint Hot Spot because it won't work.

#4 is there a specific site or guide for adding roms safely and without blowing up your phone?

It was a learn as you go thing for a lot of people, because like you said, there is not end all questions document with the exact process. My signature has a link to ROMS. Find one that sounds/looks cool and download the zip file provided. You might also export your contacts to your SD card. Open People, press menu and choose the right option to do this. Reboot the phone using the volume down/power button routine listed above. Remember, Nandriod backup your current ROM in case you don't like your new ROM. You should always (unless otherwise specified) wipe your phone. Once you boot into the RECOVERY screen (where you choose nandroid) select wipe data/factory reset and confirm it, then choose wipe cache partition and confirm it, then choose advanced and then choose wipe Dalvik cache. Do all these two times it you want, it won't hurt.
After wiping all that stuff, go back a screen or two until you find 'install zip from SD card' and choose that and then choose 'choose zip from sdcard' and then find your zip file for the rom you want and confirm to flash it. Wait 5 minutes or so for it to complete and then reboot the phone. ROM flash is done.
I put all my ROMS in a folder called ROMS on my CD card, same with radio/wimax updates and any apps for easy access and so Idon't have a bunch of files on the root of the sdcard.

If you take it in they will know. Apparently they cannot tell remotely it is rooted, but I am not 100% sure.

NEVER install Sprint software updates that appear on your phone if you are rooted. You can install radio, wimax or pri updates if you want/need to.

This varies from user to user. Do a search in the market for Root and read over some you find. Some good ones are (you will need to search XDA or the market): Shootme (takes screen shots), App Brain (back up/sync apps), Titanium Backup (remove bloatware and backup stuff), Extended Controls (widget to add controls), Quadrant Standard (system test), Quick Boot (get to Bootloader in one click), ROM Manager (haven't used yet), ES File Explorer (browse sdcard and system memory), WiMAX Notifier, Wireless Tether.

Yes, I am not sure how because I have not done it.

We will never know them all but here are a few. ROOT means to gain access to the system/OS of your phone. ROOT is a user account (in linux, like Administrator in windows) that has access to EVERYTHING on your phone. ROM is like the O/S on your computer. SDK is the software developer kit thta helps make apps and stuff.
I am not sure what exactly a kernel is, maybe like the BIOS of a computer, the underlying software that controls the hardware??

Both my Samsung Epic, and my Imac saw the wireless tether app, and the barnacle app, but then they couldnt find them again... okay, Im going to try it with my ipod touch, and go through step by step, every option I checked. starting with the wireless tether app: bringing up app, clicked menu, setup, use bluetooth: unchecked, dont disable wifi: checked, discoverable: checked, wifi--- enable wifi encryption: unchecked, encryption setup method and change passphrase both greyed out, change ssid: JaymesEvo, change channel: channel 01 (2412 mhz), security---- enable acess control:unchecked, lan--- change lan:192.168.2.0/24, notifications----- client notification mode: all clients, notification ringtone: silent, vibrate on connect: checked, ----miscellaneous, disable update check: unchecked, disable wake lock: checked, disable battery-temperature:unchecked--- then under menu access control:disabled

my evo's settings:
wireless and networks: airplane mode: unchecked, wi-fi: connected to netgear, wi-fi settings: network notification: checked, bluetooth:unchecked, bluetooth settings: device name, discoverable, scan for devices:all greyed out, sprint hotspot: unchecked (but when i check it, it says thisortable hotspot evo bce257 active), sprint hotspot settings:just comes up with a pic of a laptop and wireless modem, and if I click okay it gives me an option to turn on sprint hotspot, the router name, and security wpa (tkip) and an insanely stupid password like some idiot would put on his luggage. now when I clicked on the turn on hotspot, I get a little picture in my status bar that says tethering or hotspot active. This freaks me out because I know how sprint likes to charge you for stuff, so then I uncheck the turn on hotspot feature, because I know I didnt sign up for it... going on down the list... 4G:unchecked, vpn settings:nothing there, mobile network:unchecked, mobile networks: data roaming:unchecked, data roam guard:checked, data roaming sound:checked, enable always-on mobile:unchecked, roaming:sprint only, call guard: checked

back to wireless tether, I press start to start tethering, menu/show log/mon sep 27 14:07:56 2010 tethering now running...done and now to check my Imac and my ipod touch

iMac: clicked on airport/searching for networks/devices/JaymesEvo/checked JaymesEvo/Testing by bringing up google/ checking Evo: Down 0.4kb, up 0.1kb iMac says failed to open page, you are not connected to the internet. Checking Evo: down 0.4kb, up 0.1kb


Switching to Ipod Touch: Ipod Touch/settings/wi-fi/JaymesEvo/ Testing: Safari cannot open page because it is not connected to the internet/ checking EVO Down 0.4KB, UP 0.1KB

turning off wireless tether, and trying barnacle:

log: says starting...... but my wifi is off... I tried to turn it back on, but then it has shut off again... am switching to mobile network. waiting... waiting.... waiting.... omg still waiting....waiting for goodness sakes, guess I will go make some coffee, take a pee, and maybe it will connect....oh there we are! back to barnacle:

So you see my issue? I wanted to lay out all my settings, so maybe everyone can see if I am missing something. I havent found any answers as of yet. Oh and my EVO was not hooked up to my the computer nor was it charging during the tests... also I did these same tests at a restaurant (with just the samsung epic) without wifi with the same results, so I dont know where I went wrong at. thank you!

wireless and networks: airplane mode: unchecked, wi-fi: connected to netgear, wi-fi settings: network notification: checked, bluetooth:unchecked, bluetooth settings: device name, discoverable, scan for devices:all greyed out, sprint hotspot: unchecked (but when i check it, it says thisortable hotspot evo bce257 active), sprint hotspot settings:just comes up with a pic of a laptop and wireless modem, and if I click okay it gives me an option to turn on sprint hotspot, the router name, and security wpa (tkip) and an insanely stupid password like some idiot would put on his luggage. now when I clicked on the turn on hotspot, I get a little picture in my status bar that says tethering or hotspot active. This freaks me out because I know how sprint likes to charge you for stuff, so then I uncheck the turn on hotspot feature, because I know I didnt sign up for it... going on down the list... 4G:unchecked, vpn settings:nothing there, mobile network:unchecked, mobile networks: data roaming:unchecked, data roam guard:checked, data roaming sound:checked, enable always-on mobile:unchecked, roaming:sprint only, call guard: checked

back to wireless tether, I press start to start tethering, menu/show log/mon sep 27 14:07:56 2010 tethering now running...done and now to check my Imac and my ipod touch

iMac: clicked on airport/searching for networks/devices/JaymesEvo/checked JaymesEvo/Testing by bringing up google/ checking Evo: Down 0.4kb, up 0.1kb iMac says failed to open page, you are not connected to the internet. Checking Evo: down 0.4kb, up 0.1kb


Switching to Ipod Touch: Ipod Touch/settings/wi-fi/JaymesEvo/ Testing: Safari cannot open page because it is not connected to the internet/ checking EVO Down 0.4KB, UP 0.1KB

I tried to turn it back on, but then it has shut off again... am switching to mobile network. waiting... waiting.... waiting.... omg still waiting....waiting for goodness sakes, guess I will go make some coffee, take a pee, and maybe it will connect....oh there we are! back to barnacle:

So you see my issue? I wanted to lay out all my settings, so maybe everyone can see if I am missing something. I havent found any answers as of yet. Oh and my EVO was not hooked up to my the computer nor was it charging during the tests... also I did these same tests at a restaurant (with just the samsung epic) without wifi with the same results, so I dont know where I went wrong at. thank you!

So what versions of wifi tether have you tried? Different versions work differently depending on your rom/kernel combo. If pre 9 doesn't work, try pre 8, then pre 7. I wouldn't mess with barnacle because wifi tether works wonderfully when you find what works for you. For instance, Fresh 3.2 and 3.3 with stock kernel pre 9 works great. I tried the netarchy kernal and kings kernel and I get the same results as what you describe, so I tried pre 8 and wifi tether worked great. I have since gone back to Fresh 3.3 with stock kernel and wifi tether pre 9 because I am seeing the best battery life with that set up.
