Root can this phone be unlocked by root?

hi

wifes been offered this phone second hand, but locked to orange. if i rooted it, would that unlock it? and is there any ROM at all i could put on it, or would i have to keep the same stock software? that wouldnt be a problem really, just need to know if i could get it to be unlocked to the 'three' network.

Moved to All Things Root where it will be seen by more root users, and, hopefully, get more replies for this issue.
