Root can you root lollipop?

So I was thinking about rooting my lg g3 but all the methods I've seen (purpledrake, stump) haven't been updated in months and I'm cautious to try them on lollipop. So my question is:
Is there a way to root lollipop if I've never rooted before?
If there isn't, is there a simple way to downgrade my current android version and root it and update( or install a ROM of) lollipop later?
I'm currently on an AT&T lg g3 (d850) that I purchased about a month ago.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

AT&T and Verison have a boot lock, it prevents most custom recovery from working, all except safestrap, so you'll first have to find the stock kernal for your phone with android 4.4.4 then root that, follow the steps to set up safestrap custom recovery (all over the internet), then download a cusom rom of android 5.0 for your phone to an external SD card, boot up in the new custom recover and locate the rom and flash it, like in this guide http://www.andromods.com/root-unlock/keep-root-vzw-galaxy-s5-official-lollipop-oa8.html different phone and files but same steps. If you already have safestrap then just flash the binary of super user from your external SD that can be found on chain fire's website.

If you're already on LP, there is no root at this time. You can downgrade back to KK however by way of a tot and LG Flash Tools as described HERE. First half of OP talks about using kdz's and a different tool, you can't do that since ATT uses only Tots. So focus on only the tot method, tools and files necessary to do that. You'll make your way to his file repository and in the D850 folder there is a tot (unzip to reveal the tot) and an lg flash dll. Those are the two target files you need when running LG Flash Tools.

Once restored back to KK, you can root by previous means. I'm not sure how they're proceeding with LP updating via bump but I'm guessing you'll hear more about it in the days ahead.

I can confirm that the above script works on lolipop. At this time I think you need to downgrade to get a custom recovery installed, however.
