Help Can you view google maps without service?

So say you want to use your phone as a personal map, and you don't have service.. This still possible. Seems to me that it would call and stream the available map.

You cannot... sort of. Using the Google Maps application you can't. However, there's an awesome program called Maverick in the Market that will actually cache maps you view. Additionally, you can prepare maps on your PC using a program called TrekBuddy and then load them to your phone.

I frequently travel to areas with no cell service at all and this is the solution.

Actually this is a good question. If you planned a route when you had service and then drove into a no service zone would you be SOL on your GPS navigation? Or is Maps smart enough to remember the specific maps for your trip?

Outatime, thanks for recommending my app!

I heard that Google Navigation will pre-cache map tiles along your route at the beginning of your trip.

Thank you! Exactly what I was looking for.

You're very welcome!

Hey Codesector! Nice to meet you. Hey I have a suggestion/request. TrekBuddy has a map I think it's called Terraserver that is USGS topo maps. Any chance that will be added in the future?

Grrrrr... deleted... message duped.

Edit: Might as well use this for something consructive...

I was using Maverick on my way to work this morning and got to work and realized that I didn't have my mobile radios turned on. Sweet.

I thought of something else Codesector... an option to either calibrate the compass to the GPS heading (or even manually) or an option to turn off the blue heading trapezoid. For some reason no matter how many times I calibrate my compass it's always off ~30 degrees.
