Help Cannot access SD Card from PC via USB

Hi all, I am having problems accessing my SD card whilst connected to my laptop via USB.
The phone connects in the usual way and after selecting disk drive by dragging down the top toolbar, i am able to see the contents of the phone.
However, the problem is that the SD card is shown as an application and wont open as a folder. After clicking on the SD card i get an error saying that it is not a valid win32 application.

I have recently changed my laptop and am running vista. Has anyone else had any problems with windows whilst trying to access their SD?

Also, the HTC USB cable that i was supplied with had developed a loose connection and wont charge anymore so i am using a Samsung USB cable for the same purpose. Would this be a problem? The phone still charges as normal.

The cable could be wired differently if its proprietary to Samsung, so it be causing an issue, yes.
 
So i've bought another official HTC USB cable but am having the same problem.

The DCIM icon which used to be classed as a folder and could be opened with the usual double click, is still listed as an application and will not open.

Becoming increasingly frustrated.

Can anyone help?
 
Can you try the phone on another PC? I'm wondering if somehow Windows has got confused with the phone and thinks it's something else when plugged in.
Have you installed PC sync? (can be found on the SD card)
What options do you get if you right-click on the SD icon rather than double-clicking it. Is there an 'open with...' option?
It's almost as if windows is trying to open things up in a shell, maybe somehow something has got associated wrong.
 
So i've tried it on another computer and it still brings up the DCIM (memory card) as an application. Leads me to believe that there is some corruption with an app i have installed maybe?
 
Try popping the card out and plugging it into a micro sd usb adaptor and see if the PC can read it then.
