Root Cannot backup current rom with CWM

OK, I am new to Android. I've had my Photon for 5 days and have been reading everything available. I can't seem to backup the current stock rom with CWM rom manager. It says you must have CWM Recovery installed but when I got to install it and confirm phone model, the Photon is not in the list. The phone is already rooted. Do I need to unroot and then unlock the bootloader first?

No need to unroot, but you MUST unlock the bootloader. Follow QBKing77's video on youtube, he will show how to unlock and install CWM. Bootstrap recovery will not let you flash most roms only a handful of locked specific roms and that is also why you can't backup stock. Not sure what may be the status on qbkings links because he was using multiupload but the feds shut it down. You will be able to find everything on XDA if the links are broken but it will take some diggin.
