Help Cannot boot Droid, can't get into recovery

Hey, I'm trying to fix up an original Moto Droid for a friend and I've been unable to find the information searching Google or these forums specifically. The phone is not rooted, no custom ROM, should be running stock 2.2.

When trying to boot, the M screen will show up and it will never get past that point. I can get into the boot loader 2C.7C (power+up on D pad), but I can't get into recovery (power+X). RSD Lite recognizes the phone, but I can't get SPRecovery on there since the phone won't reboot past the "M" screen.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Take a look at this: http://androidforums.com/droid-all-things-root/136508-guide-all-things-root-related.html

Specifically, the section titled How to revert back to Stock 2.0, 2.0.1, 2.1, or 2.2 (click the little word show to see the 'hidden' info.

Since you can get into the bootloader, you can use RSDLite to flash a known good working .SBF file that will then let you root using the rest of the guide. The instructions to flash .SBFs require that you have RSDLite and the appropriate drivers (which you already do) and load the phone into the bootloader.

I would recommend that you grab the latest RSDLite as well as the latest 2.2 .SBfile from here: Peter Alfonso

I appreciate the help, but unfortunately I'm not having any luck with the steps you provided.

RSDLite is able to proceed successfully up until the point where it says "rebooting the phone" (or something close). The phone stays at the 'M' screen, and RSDLite eventually says "please manually power up this phone". I tried with the 2.2 sbf and the 2.0 sbf with the same results.

Do you know of any other avenues I could try to fix this phone?

When you get the "please manually power up this phone" message, just go to your notification bar, go to USB type and set it to PC mode. You should get a pass in a few seconds.

The phone won't boot into the OS, it just sticks at the black screen with the Motorola "M" symbol.

OK, so you go through the steps and it acts like it is passing information to the phone, correct? And then, at step 7, when you manually reboot, it only reboots to the M logo?

He cannot get into the OS.

did you wipe cache and data BEFORE you SBFd?

Unnecessary - and unable to do it. He cannot get to OS, and cannot get into recovery.

This is not installing a ROM nor rooting - this is replacing everything on the phone with a purely stock image with no apps, no data, no cache, just like it was when it was bought from the store.

I'm not sure how to wipe the cache and data when I only have access to the bootloader, not the recovery. Is there a way to do this that I have missed?

You cannot. But you don't need to either, as the .SBF files are fully functional files that erase everything and put a pristine OS on the phone.

Just to be sure - did you obtain the files from Pete Alfonso's site? he has links to a newer version of RSDLite (4.9), plus all the stock .SBF files as well, and even if you have the Motorola drivers, make sure that you have the latest version (4.8.0) - go here to get them - USB and PC Charging Drivers - Motorola Mobility, Inc. USA

(Click the link that says Motorola 4.8.0 Driver with MotoConnect* - same package applies to both 32bit and 64bit OSs.

Correct. RSDLite is going through the "flashing" etc, the phone is showing "SW Update In Progress....", and the Executed % counts up to 100 for each step.

I tried this all again from a different computer (out of necessity), so I know that I have RSD 4.9, the 2.2 stock SBF file (this link), and the latest Motorola driver from the link you provided.

Same results this time, RSDLite gets to the "Phone is being rebooted" step (which I let climb up to 100% executed which takes a few minutes), and the phone stays on the "M" screen.

Yeah, at this point it sounds like something is really hosed somewhere. It's probably time to get it repaired (i.e. replaced) if it is under warranty.

I didn't realize he couldn't get the OS. And a wipe of the cache is absolutely necessary to prevent a bootloop after SBFing a D2G, so I thought it would be the same, my bad.

Wait, after RSDLite, how long did you let the M logo sit?

On one attempt it was about 10 minutes, most of the others it was closer to 5 minutes.

And you're sure it is a DROID, not a Milestone?
Yep, unless Verizon pulled some crazy shenanigans, this phone is a DROID.

I was kind of afraid of that. It is out of warranty but it was worth a shot to try and fix it. I appreciate all of your help, thanks!
