Cannot open the correct app

chrism

Lurker
Hi, I recently switched phones because my son wanted a new one. I went from a LG motion to htc evo.

When I used my motion I could click links from anywhere and they would open in their respective apps. Or at least give me the option to open in browser or app.

Why won't the htc do that?

I've looked around everywhere I could think for the answer, but found nothing. Any help here is much appreciated. Thanks,

Hi chrism, and welcome to the forum :)

So what does happen if you click on a link? Because with every HTC device/OS I've used clicking a link will open the default app/browser if set, or ask you which to use. That's normal Android behaviour. So to suggest a fix for your problem we need to know what your phone's behaviour is instead?

My guess is that you've already got something else defined as the default app. If so, go to Settings > Apps, select whatever app is opening the links and click "clear defaults". Then next time you click a link it will ask you what app it should use.

Hi Hadron, thanks for the welcome.
I did go to settings and cleared defaults a few days ago. It didn't seem to do much.

When I click a link it goes to default browser, it tells me I should download the app. (It didnt do this before I cleared defaults) I guess it doesn't recognize the app is already installed.

Other times it opens default browser first and then automatically goes to the app.(only for certain apps) Sometimes it will go straight to the play store. other times it will just open the browser and that's it. (like before clearing defaults) I guess it probably depends on the type of link, I'm not sure.

Does that help?

Thank you for the reply, its a frustrating problem.
