Help Cannot read menus

New to Android - incredibly frustrated right now. Received Memo Pad 7 today (ME176CX. For whatever reason - many of the menus are translucent, with white text. For example - in the Play Store, searching for an app, or installing an app brings up what is clearly some kind of modal window - but the background is completely translucent and the text is white. The overflow menu (I think that is what it's called - the three dots) - the same issue. I've tried messing around with themes but there are hundreds of them. Surely there must be some kind of setting somewhere. I know Asus has a default launcher because I installed Apex and it told me to turn off the Asus launcher. In any event - can someone please tell me how to change these settings before I throw this thing through the wall.

I rebooted and now the menus are displaying as I would expect (i.e., background is opaque and text is readable).
