cannot remove stocks widget from screen

I have the stocks widget running. I wish to remove it. a long press, to get to edit mode, does not work. A long press opens the app, rather than getting the icon to vibrate.
What am I doing wrong?

I've occasionally had that problem where long pressing on a widget just opened it in stead of picking it up. Restarting the phone always fixed it for me.
