Help Can't clear desire caches

Solly

Lurker
I have an unrooted desire and when I look at apps in the android app manager it always shows that they have 0 cache and the clear cache button is greyed out. I know these apps have cahces, they continue to keep old information offline, I mean things like facebook and the internet dont show as having a chache when it's really very obvious that they do. this is getting to be a real problem as my internal memory keeps filling up and there is nothing I can do about it as far as I can see except for doing a hard reset.
If anyone knows of a solution to this I would be very grateful, if not and I do have to factory reset is there any way to back up the data from certain apps but not others without rooting the phone?

You can delete cache with adb from Android SDK, download it from here:
Android SDK | Android Developers

Using is described here:
Android Debug Bridge | Android Developers
Adb\fastboot for rookies - Android Forums

Enable "USB debugging" under Settings/Applications/Development to be able to connect via adb. Basically, to delete browser cache, you have to do this (from SDK tools folder):
"adb remount"
"adb shell"
"cd /data/data/com.android.browser/cache/webviewCache/"
"rm *"
"exit"

I don't know about Facebook (don't use it:-), but principle is the same:
"adb remount"
"adb shell"
"cd /data/data/"
"ls"
now you have to find the facebook folder and change the directory to it:
"cd <facebook directory>"
now you have to find the cache folder and change the directory to it:
"cd <cache directory>"
"rm *"
"exit"

Thanks, that would be useful if I could connect my phone to my computer via usb but since that also doesn't work properly it's not an option. I swear more things are broken with this phone than working, I wish I'd never bought it.

Ok i've got the usb working, it turns out that for some reason the desire is exceptionally fussy about which usb port it is plugged into. Is there a way to actually fix the issue so I can clear caches from my phone, it's not exactly convenient having to plug it in to do so and i'd be fairly worried about deleting the wrong thing if I use usb debugging.

Everything is safe, as long as you don't make some mistake:-)
Just joking, it's pretty safe, I've also deleted the cache on my phone (and then linked it to sdcard, so it don't consume internal memory). Way how to move caches is described here (it should also work on unrooted phone via adb) :
Android Forums - View Single Post - scripts for rooted phones.
It looks like the Facebook is named com.facebook.katana :
android - UI state of activity not cleared when killing the activity while in background (on rooted phone) - Stack Overflow

Maybe you can try some cache cleaner from Market so see, if it can do the work instead of adb (I've found just one for unrootd phones, most are for rooted) :
1-click cleaner ~ Android Application v1.06 By OPDA.cn | Tools

PS: found second cache cleaner for unrooted phones :

Thanks,
I've tried cache cleaners before and the trouble is the phone is reporting all caches as 0 so they simply don't find anything. I think I will have to factory reset, but I will be assigning the cache for larger apps to the sd to save some room.

If you connect to adb, you can check, which applications data use most space :
"adb shell du -h /data/data/"
and find out, if it's really cache, what eats your memory.
It also can be ****ed-up "Dialer storage", which holds SMS and MMS messaged and can grow up to hunderts of megabytes.
