Help cant delete text messages.

I've tried waiting while I'm at work and just help a customer, but when I come back to my phone, it's still frozen. Also, the SMS Quick Delete is now going on 30 minutes...

try pressing home button and then opening handcent again, repeat a few times if neccessary and check if thread is deleted.

It freezes upon trying to open Handcent and I get the black screen. I finally gave up and just turned off and on my phone and decided those texts are there to stay...

mine is having same problem....aboue 3-4k txt total...

when i use sms delete app it does a forse close ...i never did any updates...if i do one will it delete txt ? getting verrrry slow and annoying

anyone figured this out ??

I am having the same problems with my Hero, I am getting pretty fed up with this phone. Anyone have a clue when a firmware update will be coming to Orange UK.

save your junk and hard reset. bout all we can do for time being. I'm bout to that point myself. doing a hard reset and don't allow messages beyond 100 lol

After a friend had a similar problem, I wrote an app to help with deleting.

An android device with around 5,000 messages takes about 7 seconds to delete a single message. Deleting a conversation of over 100 messages will take around 10 minutes and there is no visual feedback.

I've written an app to help keep message numbers at manageable level.

Basically, you specify a time period, for example 1 month, and the app will delete all messages that are over 1 month old.

There is visual feedback of the process - so you know the phone is actually deleting the messages rather than hanging / force close.

The app can take a while to complete, but will make your messaging app so much more responsive.

The app is called "Delete old messages" from JADS Limited.
Its on the android market free of charge.

Hope it helps,

Mike

sounds good. but can you get it to not delete like the last 50 or so messages in the conversation. sometimes keeping a couple helps with remembering what it was we were talking about. I was almost tempted to delete all using the pre kitchen but backed out. didn't want to lose all messages

Found a solution over at xda..

If you're rooted, just open an adb shell and type:

Code:
rm /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db

Just as a warning it deletes every message.

So glad I found this, no lag in my messaging app anymore, woop!

i solved it,
ok so here you go,
if you are running 1.5 cdma sprint hero,
it takes about 1.5 seconds to delete a message
JUST ONE MESSAGE
so to verify, i deleted a thread with one message,
a thread with 15 messages, and a thread with 456 messages
and the results were.

one message thread, about a second,
15 message thread about
the 456 message thread took about 11 minutes and a half.
the reason it takes so long to delete, is 2 reasons,

a half assed bunch of roots and codes by the developers, which is why they have to release a 2.0/2.1 or whatever it is to fix the codes

lousy hardware, honestly, i havent seen the g1, but i believe the generation of android phones we have, are what i would like to call a halfstep,
more like an htc g1 on steroids, not a whole new system.

so an easy guide to deleting messages,
go to your display settings, make screen timeout never, (so the phone doesnt freeze,)
make sure the auto backlight is in to protect your screen,
use the DEFAULT MESSAGE THAT THE PHONE CAME WITH, i cant explain how crucial this is. for some reason, maybe just for me, but the default works better, and doesnt freeze up.
delete each thread, and wait
=D
best of luck to you all

My phone is a HTC Legend, not a Hero... but they are pretty similar, and my Legend still has the same problems you guys are describing here but I think I've solved my problem.

I had about 2500 messages from one contact and my phone was completely bugging out and running really slowly. I figured it might be because of the volume of messages it had to keep loading so I tried to delete them all. There was no visual aid to show you that it was actually deleting anything, so I kept messing with it thinking it wasn't working and then it would all crash *sadface*

Download a free program off the Android Market called "Delete old messages". As far as I can see it doesn't speed up the lengthy process off deleting over 2k messages, and it will still take a very long time, but it actually shows you how many messages it has deleted and how many it still has to delete.

This means that you know it's actually doing something and you're not as eager to pick up your phone and start poking it, usually resulting in the ominous "force close" message :)

i have the 2.1 version  and am having the same problem i am a huge texter.. 3k in one day. normally i delete once they get to 400 per thread.. this time i was too busy and didnt. every time i tried to delete any thread i would get a force close pop up. finally after trying seven times i took my battery out for 20 min.. tried it again and it worked just fine. :)

also i have to hard reset my phone constantly because i will stop getting pic messages.. if you are resorting to that download my backup pro to make sure you save all your contacts.. if you have a memory card with all your pics n music its really not a big deal.. i can redo my screen settings within 20 min. a hard reset is not the death of your phone just a new beggining and seems to fix just about any problem :D

I had the same problem i had about 7000 txts all in different threads with 1 thread having 4000! Tried to delete them and it just crashed on me so heres what i did..

Downloaded the app SMS QUICK DELETE.

Went to setting > Sound & display > Untick Orientation > Screen timeout Tick Never timeout.

Took sim card out so i couldnt recive any txts or calls that would makin the deletin crash.

Start up SMS QUICK DELETE > Tick what thread u want to delete. i just clicked select all. (Plug in charger so battery doesnt die)

7000+ txts deleted took a while but was worth it, phones running much faster now ;)

Hi. I had the same problem. This is what worked for me.
I plugged in my phone to the charger. Set screen time out to never. Put the phone in airplane mode. Selected the thread to delete and pressed delete. Then I just left the phone alone...didn't touch any buttons or even move it :). My longest thread took 20-30 minutes. Every other method I tried froze up the phone....this way worked, so I'm sticking to it.
I know the question here is a little old, but I searched everywhere for something that worked and couldn't find anything. Maybe someone else searching will find this.

I have tried to delete threads from both standard Text app and Handcent. It is very annoying, the only way i have found to delete a thread is to reset my phone to manufacturing settings. This sucks because you end up losing the texts you want to keep.

thanks guys, my phone has 5700+ in one thread, im going to try this method tonight and see if it works. wish me luck

All pretty simple if you have time....alot of time!!

I've had about 14k in text messages and was making my HTC Hero run very slow. I first started deleting my smaller threads...the ones that had 1-20 or so txts. It took awhile cuz each msg was taking anywhere from 14-20 seconds to delete! So a thread of 15 texts was taking 5 min to delete! And you really cant use your phone if ur trying to delete a message!! Sucks!!

Then the longer one's, 1000+, I would delete the thread before I went to bed and in the morning, the thread would be deleted (most of the time). Sometimes I had to do this a couple of times. Note: Don't delete if you think you might need to use your phone for any reason cuz the HTC hero seems to need all it's resources to delete txts!! If you need to use your phone while ur deleting, you're gonna need to power down to stop everything! It can be a real fricken pisser!!

I noticed that as my total txt volume went down, the deleting started to get faster.

I finally was able to delete my longest thread of over 4200 txts the other night!! I first calculated it would've taken most of the day but it was deleted overnight! So now my Hero runs alittle better. I won't let my texts ever get that high again!

Instead, i backed up my texts to a file (many apps to do that), then deleted them. At least I can save some of the texts I wanted to save.

Hope that helps.....

Try the "history eraser" from the market app store

so im a pretty private guy and i hate when my girl reads my texts i send and recive. with old phones id just delete my messages. but with my hero i cant delete messages in chompSMS nor the normal messagner app. ill hold down my finger and press delete and it just doesnt delete anything and most of the time crashes my phone and i have to reset my phone. this is VERY annoying because when she grabs my phone i have to fight to get my phone back so she doesnt see any of my texts that i CANT delete ! helppp !

We all want to delete the SMS messages we get on our iPhones sometimes. Whether that's because you want to keep your Messages app tidy or because a message had something in it you don't want someone else to see, a simple swipe usually takes care of things.
Permanently erase data from your iPhone before sell or give away to a friend or relative with iPhone Data Eraser. Please completely delete all your data and personal information safely before selling your iPhone, or gift to your friends and relatives.

Hope you already solve your problem. If you deleted some sms from your Android phone and you want to get them back. I recommend you this article about recovering deleted text messages from Android phone.
