Help Can't download update

I've been trying to download the update for my Fascinate, but it keeps failing. I check for updates, and it says new update available. Then I click OK to download. It appears to start, then always stops at 10% and network error pops up. When I go to update status, it says "network error" and "code 409".

make sure you aren't using wifi, and that your phone is stock.

Already checked that. Phone is all original. Tried taking battery out, re-starting, and programming with *228. Still, it always stops downloading at 10%.

Update: I contacted Verizon tech support, and they had me do a hard reset as a last resort before sending a replacement phone. At first that did not help, and I got the same error message. But I tried the update again this morning, and it worked.

When I do a hard reset, am I going to have to move around all of my icons back to where I had them pre-reset? And will I lose other things, like the way I have my buddies now widget set up?
