Can't fix messaging window :(

I have the LG Optimus One, and I'm in android keyboard form. Now, when I turn the phone sideways (to get a larger keyboard) the text box is too large for me to see who I am typing to. When I turn it right side up, I can see the keyboard, the text box, and the previous messages from the recipient , and it used to be the same for when it was sideways. I think I may have changed something but can't find the setting anywhere. Please help! haha
