Root Can't flash ROM

mzagorski

Newbie
So far, here's where I'm at...

HTC Desire CDMA.
HBOOT 0.98.0000.
ROM 1.28.557.4

I used unrevoked on the phone, installed titanium backup (and backed up the various stuff I need), I have superuser permissions.

I want to backup my ROM (I think I'm supposed to do that?!)... I got ROM Manager Premium, realized that it was just the auth code, tried to download the free ROM Manager but it says that it's not compatible with my device.

Then I tried ROM Toolbox > ROM Manager > Backup ROM > Tells me that ROM Manager blocked others appts from creating backups unless ROM Manager Prem. is installed (which I don't seem to be able to install....)

If I try to do a reboot recovery, the phone boots up into the white screen with HTC logo in the center... Can't get out of there unless I pull the battery.

Anyone able to shed some light on what I need to do to get this phone playing ball :) So far it's not bricked and still functions so I guess that's good lol.

Rom manager is a massive no no, it's been known to cause issues with the Desire.

Can you boot into recovery?
Power the phone on holding volume down, then scroll down (using the volume keys and the power button to select "Recovery ")

Anything happen? You probably have Clockwork mod installed due to unrevoked. I've always used this and never had problems.

To back up your rom, while in recovery,( now using the track pad to move and pressing it in to select)
Select Backup /restore / backup.

This will create a Nandroid backup.
This is a complete system image of your phone. Backs up everything on the phone. (not the sd card though)

To restore its back in recovery
Backup / Restore / restore.

Though, I don't know if you have broken your current rom.

Since you said TI has backed up everything you could try factory reset it.
This is also in the recovery.
. See if that allows your phone to boot.

If it does, result.
Restore from TI, then back it all up via Recovery.

I reboot the phone using the vol down + power ... brings up the white screen with restore option. I scroll down to restore, select by using power button... Phone reboots and goes to a white screen with green HTC logo in the center. Just sticks on that screen and doesn't go any further.

If I turn the phone on like normal I can use my phone like normal.

Sounds like you don't have any custom recovery installed. That is if you meant Recovery option, not Restore.

You might try installing 4EXT Recovery (found here). It's the free Recovery Updater that you want. You really have to read up on it before flashing, though!

Yes, I meant recovery. I tried doing revoked again and it gave me an error about firmware being too new.

I did cmd > adb shell and it came up with a $ so I'd take that to mean the phone isn't rooted?

Also, I can see /sdcard in Astro but it's showing as empty..., but viewing from Win XP I don't see that directory unless /sdcard.

Also, if I try to do anything in 4EXT Recovery Control, it tells me I need to install 4EXT Recovery first. Then it tells me that a previously downloaded update was found (v1.0.0.5 RC3)... I try to flash that.... It reboots my phone. Then I'm back to where I started...

If you have an app called Superuser (pirate android icon), then you have root, and will not need to run unrevoked again.

The 4EXT updater help you flash the recovery itself. What do you mean when you say that you are back to square one? Selecting recovery from hboot screen gets you stuck on white screen?

If you put your SD card in an external cardreader, what does it have on it?

Would it not be easier to push a recovery?

It may very well proove to be so. I suggested the 4EXT as that would circumvent the whole fastboot commands learning curve. Running an APK and allowing the app to install the recovery seemed like the easiest way forward.

I defer to your greenness, Thyseh ;)

You can't flash a,recovery right now then. Suggest you go the, revolutionary route. Well that's the only route so ya know....

I've looked around and can't find any way of getting my cdma desire's root updated from 0.98 to 1.06 to enable me to use revolutionary. Any other options I can do to get s-off?...

OK, so I got unrevoked-forever.zip ... renamed it to update.zip and saved it to the sdcard. rebooted phone with power down. got to boot screen. selected recovery... get a bunch of messages saying the phone is looking for an image etc... then it goes to white HTC screen and sticks there. Am I missing a step?

Oh is that how unrevoked forever works?

I dont know if the PB99IMG.zip on the root of SD would work for this? Need some CDMA users to comment but there are not many.

1.06 Hboot came with the 2.2 update. Are you on 2.1?

Cool. Once that's done, just go through the revolutionary guide. You'll be starting from scratch basically.
