Help Can't hear sound with display off?

Hi, I'm a bit of an Android newb here and just got my 1st phone, an LG Optimus L7 running ICS. For some reason after my display turns off I can't hear my ringtone or notifications. (Music is fine) I've tried varying it from a lock screen to no lock screen but no change. When the screen is on I can hear these with no problem. Any ideas? I am quite frustrated since I can't hear my incoming calls or texts

Hoping this can help someone else if they run into this confounding issue ...

I have solved my problem through a little trial and error. I have 2 calling apps installed on my phone text plus and magic jack, for some reason if I shut down one with the screen off I get the dreaded silence but when both are running my notifications work. Shared processes maybe? In any case it's good to have my phone working normally.
