Root Can't install OTA update

thx138

Lurker
I boot the phone, find the install file and start the update but I get:
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted

Any help about that I need to do so I can install this update?

I am rooted, I used the how to in this forum and installed the CWM. All I have done is remove software after the root, no ROM changes are done.

Okay, to do the update you must have a locked bootloader, the stock recovery and not be rooted (or have an app that will temporary unroot your phone). There are a couple of options that you have in order to get your phone updated:
  1. Use the nandroid from xda to flash with your current setup (see below for details). This is probably the easiest way.
  2. Unroot through SuperSU, flash back to the stock recovery, and lock the bootloader (you can redo all of that after updating).

For the CWM nandroid check here: Nandroid of Stock TMOUS 1.84 Rooted. You will lose all your user apps/data, but since you are rooted, you can back them up with titanium backup (or some other app if you prefer it) and restore that after flashing. Also, since you are using CWM, you have to flash the radio separately (since they updated that as well). There are instructions on how to do that here: Radio Update (it also has a link on that page for the radio download Radio from OTA_Ville_U_TMOUS_1.84.531.2).

If you want to go with the other option, I can give you some more help with that.

Is there a good how to for installing that root file? I tried to do it from CWM recovery but it failed installing several time.

*EDIT*
I got it flashed back to the stock rom now.

Is there really any benefit of installing the update? I have the same issue and dont know if I can be really that bothered about doing this.

It addresses a few issues (which you may not be experiencing) an updates the radio. If you don't feel that you need it, I don't think that you need to bother with it.

Thanks for the info AgentC! I think i will wait a bit then for my one s, but is there a way to stop it from notifying me on regular basis?

I am running TrickDroid, so it doesn't notify me. I'm not sure how to stop that and I can't test for you at the moment. Hopefully someone else can help. ;)
