Help can't make calls on my lg esteem ?

hello all today my phone was working fine then around 7pm eastern time no service at all its weird it shows i have 1 bar but when i try to make a call it goes to no bars then just gray screen and never connects call no ring or anything is there maintenance going on . anyways been trying for about 1 hour and still nothing. is my phone broke? any help would be great thanks
 
tried restarting it? or putting on the airplane mode then turning it back off?

sometimes it can also be that metro is doing service updates in your area.

To add to what bnb said, and take no offense because Ive done this numerous of times and couldnt figure it out right away, you did pay your bill right? Ahaha I went 3 hours thinking calling service was down (oddly even disconnected I could still send SMS) but really my stupid slow self just forgot to pay my bill the day before Ahaha

I let one bill go one day late and they cut it off. Forgot pre paid was different. After that i started paying a month in advance.
 
hi fuzzy thanks for the advice i think my phone is in test mode because of where you said prl is at 40000 but the part where you said if you have service then skip to test mode fix does that mean if my bill is paid or if i get data because i do get 4g but i can't make calls when i try it says network busy so i just need to know where to start go to test mode fix are start from the beginning
 
all i can say is fuzzy thank you so much i followed all of your instructions and my phone is now in working order thank you thank you so much i really appreciate all of the community helping you guys are awesome i dont know if i can plus rep but if i can let me know you guys are the best :)
