Can't recognise MP3 files

Hi all, I've searched this forum and google for an answer to my problem, and I can't find one, I'm hoping someone here can help me!

I've downloaded a number of mp3 tracks onto my HTC Desire through multiple sources at different times. Before upgrading to the new OS a few months ago, all of these tracks regardless of name, size or location automatically loaded onto the stock musicplayer.

The problem I have now is that only a random selection of these files are visible by any music player, some of the more advanced ones state that there is no ID3 info, and that's just not true. Using AndroXplorer to open any undetected files will play the song in the stockplayer, but with no info displayed.

I've tried re-transferring files, changing music player, unmounting sd card, changing file locations to no avail! Has anyone else had this issue or know how to solve it?

I had a problem with some older MP3's that only had ID3V1 tags. I'm fairly sure it was my Desire that had the problem, but not 100%.

Anyway, if you open the tracks with a decent tag editor (I use MP3TAG) it will show you both the ID3V1 and V2 tags, and you should be able to copy in any missing V2 info. See if that helps...

Thanks, I've done that and it now says that although the encoding and extension is MP3, the file is in MPEG-1 Layer 1 format, and this is the issue...I'm tempted to give up and buy an ipod!

Does anyone know where the 'best' folder to put all music tracks is???

Mine live in /MP3 and stuff that I've downloaded from Amazon in /amazonmp3. Stock player finds them all OK, but I use 2player now.

Out of interest, what does Windows think they are?

A really strange thing has just happened, I downloaded the audiotagger app to attempt to tag the files. I found that I could open them in mixzing via this app, but when if I even open the tag details, I can no longer play that file in any player.

Do you mean that while you have the tag details open in audiotagger, you can't play them?
I'd say this is normal behaviour - Audiotagger has a file handle open which says to the OS "I'm using this - Hands off". An application can ignore this and open it anyway, but most probably won't.
