Can't see speech to text in 2.1?

Have now got 2.1 on my Hero hooray but cannot see one feature I was looking forward to which is speech to text. Have installed Voice Search ok along with the synth but my keyboard still doesn't have the mic icon. Any ideas cheers.

I could only find it by using the search widget. It's in there but not anywhere else as far as I can see.

Nope, it doesn't require root access as far as I can see (it's called rooting on android, not jailbreaking :) ). It's certainly not listed in the requirements. You'd just need to enable the installation of non-market apps in the settings.

If you try it please report back if it works or not. I'm sure there are lots of people on the official firmware who want text to speech :)

I installed the above keyboard. sadly it doesnt work. It gives me error. I installled vlingo. Its pretty ok..

can someone please tell me how to have mic next to google search as seen some where? Thanks a ton!

To get the mic next to Google search you need to download Google Search by voice from the market.

Holding down the hardware search button on the phone will bring up a voice search then :)

For some reason HTC haven't put the speech to text files on the hero update. However there is an app in the market called "Uber keyboard" that installs the required files and puts an option to use speech to text on pretty much anything you would normally type in (email, text messages, twitter... etc)

It's a handy app, you can try it for free for about 7 days or something, but if it does what you want i think the full version is under $2 anyway. Which would have seemed like a bargain if you didn't already know that it should have been on there for free. Haha

I am a beta tester for the vlingo beta android i received the email tuesday to click on the application and to download. But it wont allow me to key in the activation code. It keeps bringing me to the paid version. WHat can i do to use it? i keep uninstalling and re-insalling and same old thing. Please help me install the correct version of beta.

Speech to text works on my 2.1 Hero with Handcent installed... well, when I say it works, it's there, but pretty pants. Maybe I just don't annunciate my words properly.

What I can't find is text to speech... had that on my Motorola V8 a couple of years ago and it was great.
